No. of episodes

[edit]

Why does the infobox say: No. of episodes 21 x 50 min, 1 x 120 min? Isn't it 14 episodes of Doc Martin + maybe 2 films + saving grace? JanCK 09:11, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

About the no. of episodes by user JanCK I know because I've got Doc Martin Series 1 and Series 2 on DVD. Series one contains 6 episodes, series 2 7 episodes. There's the Xmas special "on the edge" (1x120 min episode) And series 3 has 7 episodes; found it on ITV site. Result a total of 21 episodes + one 120 min episode as found on the wikipedia page.Ally be 17:48, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

15 October 2007 episode

[edit]

I would say that the statement being added by User:Neilofwatford is a fair contribution if a reference is provided - I would propose giving him or someone a week or so to give a reference to some complaints to prevent an edit war - if there had been a significant number of complaints, one of the news websites would have picked up on it. Worth noting [1] - the episode got about 8 million viewers so if a load of people had been offended it's going to be picked up on. Halsteadk 16:00, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Neilofwatford seems to have declined to find a reference and persists in re-adding his statement regarding the "shocking" appearance of non-family material in a post-watershed programme. I have added a caution to his user talk and I now consider it fair game to remove his statement immediately if he doesn't provide a reliable reference. Halsteadk 10:06, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Autism

[edit]

the Doc displays many autistic spectrum traits, specifically AS, but this hasn't been mentioned here. think it was referenced in S03E03. dreamcatcher23 03:07, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't seen that ep yet, but the same thing struck me from just watching the program. I know a couple of people with AS, and the doc's social behaviour and ability to focus reminded me of them. 65.222.202.202 (talk) 20:19, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you can reference a published article that discusses whether the character shows such traits, it would be original research to say any more than AS has been alluded to in an episode. You cannot make the link yourself and include it (and expect it to stay in the article). Halsteadk (talk) 20:29, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AS was alluded to by another character (the psychological researcher with an uncontrolled son), but Doc denied it. There is no place that I know of where it was confirmed, unless it is in the last season. 99.43.32.160 (talk) 22:25, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As a high functioning AS person I can assure readers that the characterisation of AS and its portrayal in the persona of Doc Martin is unnervingly accurate. Most episodes leave me either weeping or squirming with familiarity - most notably a life led in a slightly parallel but still connected universe to rest of you and a social disconnection that marginalises. How the character is drawn and acted shows amazing insight or enormous coincidental luck by the writer and or actor, I suspect the former. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 211.30.220.45 (talk) 04:40, 18 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Doc-Martin.jpg

[edit]

Image:Doc-Martin.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Is the title image currently used (i.e. "Doc Martin") the best image to use for this page? Is it that iconic? Or would a photo of the main character, Doc Martin, or the cast be more appropriate? I personally would prefer a character or cast photo--thoughts? Tepkunset (talk) 16:44, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Jazmine Simpson as Natalie Turner (2007-)

Jazmine Simpson does not appear to be credited in the closing credits of the programme, and offhand I cannot recall the character she is listed as portraying. Also (2007-) implies that she will be a returning character in the next series. Who is she, and is there any evidence to support this implication?

Similarly, the revision of the reference to Stewart Wright to read (2004-2005, 2008-) implies that the character of Mark Mylow, who had apparently been working as a plumber in Poland, will be returning. Again, is there any evidence for this? In any event, as far as I am aware, a fourth series is highly unlikely to be aired before 2009 (so 2008- seems misleading at best). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.221.133.226 (talk) 11:42, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know this is supposed to be about the article and not the show but I will be thrilled if Mark Mylow returns! Derekbd (talk) 17:37, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: China Chow as Gemma (2008/2009-)

This actor and her character appeared in a recent revision, but there is no reference provided to back up the insertion. Moreover, the indicated year of first appearance for this actor (ie 2008) can only be correct if there is to be a 2008 Doc Martin Christmas Special, but, as it stands, whether any such program is to air is pure speculation unless, of course, a definitive reference can be provided.

In short, can any references be provided to back up this insertion ?.....Thanks :-) Lambsr (talk) 09:11, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since no references have been provided I have deleted the China Chow insertion. Perhaps that will force the issue :-) Lambsr (talk) 08:53, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The two movies

[edit]

Shouldn't we add a section about the three movies. I know it's mentioned but all the information about them is scattered through the text. I just bought the movie called Doc martin, i've had saving grace on dvd for a long time and i just ordered doc martin and the legend of the cloutie and watching these i see they obviously are part of this program and reading through this page i didn't realise there were three other movies until at least the 3rd time i looked!90.242.116.166 (talk) 17:38, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tristan Sturrock Info

[edit]

An editor made this edit without comment or explanation despite the guidance provided by WP:ES. Is the statement as it read in the article,

“Although Clunes' character is the only one to carry over (with significant back-story changes) from the telefilms, Tristan Sturrock joins Clunes as the only actor (thus far) to appear in both versions of Doc Martin,”

factually incorrect? Was the deletion signed vandalism? What is wrong with the deleted text?

Since no explanation was provided and I could not fathom what was wrong with the deleted text in the first place, I reverted the deletion here. Additionally, I indicated in the edit summary my reason for the reversion: “Undid revision 287105395 by Michael Smaje (talk) No reason was given for previous deletion of information in edit summary as per WP:ES.”

Instead of re-doing/reverting the edit, and this time providing the information as to why, the editor chose, less than 10 minutes later, to simply revert my reversion — and, as expected, without explanation — and start a wholly unnecessary reversion war and double the problem with the edit: (1) No reason for the edit itself (2) nor for the reversion war. A simple statement in either edit summary would have prevented my first reversion and then my second. Please read WP:EW.

Does this article still need a section on the timing of Season Four?

[edit]

The article still features a rather lengthy discussion of the timing for making and showing Season Four. I can see that, at some point in the past -- i.e., before Season Four was made and became publicly available -- this was a hot topic. Now it is old history.

Is there any good reason not to eliminate this whole section of the article at this point? Nandt1 (talk) 03:07, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have reverted the deletion of the section covering Series 4 because the edit resulting in its omission not only deleted what might be regarded as 'speculation' but also much that was simply a statement of fact. As far as I'm concerned, there is room in the article for information regarding the gestation of Series 4, since that will be of interest to the fans - in the same way that information about Series 5 will be of interest, even subsequent to broadcast (ditto, series 6, etc.). I have no problem with the Series 4 section being re-written to perhaps be less 'speculative', but deletion in its entirety is unnecessary (indeed, could be regarded as vanadlism). Lambsr (talk) 08:58, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have edited the section to try to remove only clearly obsolete material. Let's be a little careful though, please, in how freely we toss around the term vandalism (or, rather, vanadlism) as regards good faith edits on Wikipedia.Nandt1 (talk) 18:42, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the section should stay but heavily edited and cut-down - it should also not have an undue weighting over info for other series or the article falls foul of WP:RECENTISM. Halsteadk (talk) 10:43, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish and French remakes

[edit]

Twice the town is spelled "Port Wenn" in this section. Should it also be corrected to "Portwenn" or is there something about the remakes I don't know? Elizium23 (talk) 23:50, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Surgery"

[edit]

The reference to the "surgery" in the Synopsis section may be confusing to an American reading audience. "Surgery" is the British English term for the American "doctor's office"; in the U.S. "surgery" is more likely to conjure up images of a hospital operating room. While "surgery" is the term used in the show, which of course makes sense in that it is a British show, its use here may be confusing. In the context of actually watching the show, it is quickly evident that "surgery" means "doctor's office". I am not sure if the editors want to "tweak" this to make it less ambiguous to readers on both sides of the Atlantic. Thanks. 207.140.179.13 (talk) 14:06, 9 February 2011 (UTC) jat[reply]

I have wikilinked the first occurrence of the word to doctor's office, which explains the British usage in its lead sentence. Elizium23 (talk) 15:54, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Northern Exposure"

[edit]

"Doc Martin is a Northern Exposure-like program" can this be removed? What is it's purpose? I have never seen, nor want to seem, Northern Exposure. As far as I can see it's an example of Wiki's US bias. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Serpren (talkcontribs) 09:55, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

agree, and I agree also with Elizium23 revert and his explanation on the talk page of the user who added this reference, so I removed it. The (quite POV) opinion of one critic can not be put as a fact in the incipit, while it could be inserted in a "critical reception" section along with the opinion of other critics. Please nobody restore before discussing here. --Maxbeer (talk) 13:23, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Northern Exposure is very similar to Doc Martin except that Northern Exposure is based in Alaska near the Canadian border. Both series deal with a doctor that moved there and has a romance with a local that lives there. Both series have a cast of quirky characters and hilarious situations and mishaps. One could almost say that Doc Martin is a British remake of Northern Exposure. Northern Exposure was a very good series indeed. Qewr4231 (talk) 10:05, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Northern Exposure is a comedy with a socially awkward big city doctor who is forced to practice in a small village filled with quirky characters. Doc Martin has a very similar premise and similar comedic interactions. The shows are too much alike to be coincidental. Both shows are very good.

The article already states (in the sidebox) that episodes from 2009 were in HD - this is series 4 onwards. No announcement of any Blu-rays, hence nothing here. Halsteadk (talk) 20:03, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yet WGBH seems to never broadcast any real HD versions, even though the channel is HD. In 2012, WGBH is broadcasting Series 5 on HD channels, but the content is just SD DVD resolution.-96.237.4.73 (talk) 17:21, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I note this article has been written to state that this is the end of Doc Martin. I can't find any articles to say it is the end of Doc Martin, so whats the source for it is? Martin Clunes has contradicted himself in his statements on this, and most recently has said it may not be the end. I may be wrong.

Name = spoiler?

[edit]

In the "Cast and Characters" section, the character of Louisa is presented as "Louisa Ellingham". While this may be accurate for later seasons, it provided a bit of a spoiler for me since I've just discovered this wonderful series and am currently up to Season 2. I had no idea the two would end up married until I read it here, and would prefer to have discovered it in the course of the series instead of here. Her unmarried name is "Louisa Glasson" - it seems to me that that's the name she should appear under in the "Cast and Characters" section, since that's the name under which she first appears in the series. 67.169.152.40 (talk) 00:23, 7 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

While I fully understand your disappointment in learning that Martin and Louisa will eventually be married sometime during the program, it has now broadcast six series, and has been popular since it was first broadcast in 2004. If Louisa's name were now changed back to "Glasson" in the list of characters, some other well-meaning Wikipedian would change it right back for the sake of accuracy. It's just one of those unresolvable issues.
For what it's worth, you really won't know they're married until it is officially done (and I will not spoil it by telling you in which episode that happens), nor how long it may last. As one who is an avid fan of the show, I can tell you that all characters will take a long and circuitous journey during the course of the seven series (seasons), with absolutely no guarantees, with the exception that it will be absolutely worth the ride.

-- Couillaud 17:45, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

@67.169.152.40 Why read a Wikipedia article about an old TV programme if you have just started watching it? It's fairly obvious that you will read things about the content! 146.200.132.58 (talk) 07:02, 5 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The main character's surname, Ellingham, is an anagram of Minghella.

[edit]

useful entry for sure, but, "The main character's surname, Ellingham, is an anagram of Minghella." what does this have to do with anything? (an anagram of thingany) someone cares about this site, but I'd suggest dropping that aside. I like aside, but geesh, unless that's the name of his daughter, I'd drop it completely. if it's important-ish, I'd move it to soemwhere else. 130.203.152.135 (talk) 23:18, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It is already somewhere else, incidentally, and the significance is explained at that point, so I've removed it entirely from the lede as it really doesn't belong there. Elizium23 (talk) 03:22, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

episode length less than 50min

[edit]

The main article currently claims that the episodes are 50min in length. The episodes on the US DVD for Series 6 are actually 48min long. The episodes on the earlier Series DVDs are about 47min long.-71.174.188.32 (talk) 15:33, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Doc Martin Cancellation

[edit]

Doc Martin has not been officially cancelled yet so I changed it to 2 September 2004 - present. It should stay this way because it is still technically a currently running TV show until they cancel it so there could very well be another series. The people who change my edits don't cite a source saying the 13 November episode was the last one and that the show has been cancelled. If it has, please cite a source like a responsible person would. God'sNotDead (talk) 02:37, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
