Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on July 31, 2012.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the precursor of the Dnestr radar, TsSO-P, took part in the Soviet Operation K tests to examine the effects of nuclear explosions on anti-ballistic missile hardware?

Hen House

[edit]

Does anyone know the reason this is called "hen house radar"? Should this be added to the article?Vinzklorthos (talk) 15:31, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

NATO gave these the code name Hen House, apparently because they look like one. Needs a reference though. Secretlondon (talk) 18:51, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Assesment

[edit]

The article has a "clarification needed" pending. Some footnotes have raw numbers which do not lead anythere. Cambalachero (talk) 18:03, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delay. I will clarify. There is, for example, a paragraph that says

"The Dnestr radars were accepted for service by the Soviet Army[clarification needed] in April 1967 and became part of the space surveillance network SKKP. [8][11]:434"

The footnotes [8] and [11] are acceptable. The problem is the ":434". Yes, the page is needed, but it must be included within the footnote, not next to it. The only thing that should be visible in the article text is the footnote, the small number that takes the reader to the place with more information. Everything else should be inside the ref tags, and not be visible withn the text. Cambalachero (talk) 16:05, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So you are rejecting the use of template:r, the standard way of giving page numbers with list defined references? My alternative would be to have a reference per page cited, which would be silly. Which policy are you using for this? I'm certainly complaint with Wikipedia:NAMEDREFS#Multiple_references_to_the_same_footnote. Secretlondon (talk) 16:29, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewing
This review is transcluded from Talk:Dnestr radar/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Reviewer: QatarStarsLeague (talk · contribs) 03:30, 13 November 2012 (UTC) This seems as if it is a good enough article, although ostensibility can sometimes be deceiving. All in all, the images used in the article are fine, and the references appear to be fine after a few passing glances. The consummate review will start, reputedly, tomorrow. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 03:30, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Lead

[edit]

So, as you have probably assumed, this review will be divided into segments, each corresponding with a section of the article. We will start with the lead:

Thank you for doing this. Secretlondon (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"They are phased array radars designed to give early warning of attack from ballistic missiles." Shouldn't the term used be radar systems?

 Done Secretlondon (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"In common with other Soviet and Russian early warning radars they are named after rivers, the Dnestr and the Dnepr." Such as? Provide the examples within the article.

I felt that it was not needed in the article but added examples as a footnote - I hope this will suffice. Secretlondon (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"As of 2012 the Russian early warning network still consists of some radars of this vintage." Comma after 2012, please.

 Done Secretlondon (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

[edit]

Everything is good here, except for one small peccancy:
Please provide the reference you used for the "Hen House" footnote in the corroborating entry in the infobox.

 Done Secretlondon (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

TsSo-P

[edit]

I fixed a grammar issue, but there are still some other issues:
"Work on the system was led by design bureau KB-1 which proposed using VHF radar RTN (Russian: РТН) and the Dunay-2 UHF radar." Can we have a wikilink for both proposed radar systems. If not, can you give a one or two sentence explanation on what VHF/UHF radar is?

I've linked to UHF and VHF. The benefits of using one frequency over another I am not sure about - I think VHF gives greater range but less resolution. The new generation of Russian early warning radar are using a mixture of the two. Secretlondon (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"and RTI proposed using VHF radar TsSO-P (Russian: ЦСО-П) and UHF radar TsSS-30 (Russian: ЦСС-30)." Same thing here. Although if you cannot provide references here, an explanation is not needed, as you will already have written one above.

I've linked the two frequencies above, does it need more than this? Secretlondon (talk) 21:37, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If this is the case, than the issue has been fixed. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 22:17, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Other than those mentioned issues, the section is good.

Dnestr

[edit]

I will be calling it a day right here, and will commence again when the issues are addressed/fixed. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 16:03, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Given the hasty response, I will retread upon my previous statement and review some more:
"This involved two sites separated in latitude..." The construction process involved building two sites?

Yes,  Done

"The two sites chosen were at the village of Mishelevka near Irkutsk in Siberia, which was called OS-1, and at Cape Gulshad on Lake Balkhash near Sary Shagan..." Please wikilink all geographic mentions.

 Done Secretlondon (talk) 20:28, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"The radars were completed in late 1966..." As I stated earlier, I believe the term used should be radar systems, as opposed to radars.

Done But I'm not sure it's always needed. Is the "system" the design rather than an installation, is each cell a system or is the system all four of them? Replacing each mention of radar with 'radar system' seems overly wordy and wrong in places. Secretlondon (talk) 20:28, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"The Dnestr radars were accepted for service by the Soviet Army[clarification needed] in April 1967 and became part of the space surveillance network SKKP." I don't believe I can remove the existing tag until you wikilink to the article you intend to denote when you say "Soviet Army".

Done Found it! It was the PVO, the Soviet air defences. Hurray! Secretlondon (talk) 20:28, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Other than those issues, everything is good.

Dnestr-M

[edit]

Changed a few things for heightened grammatical accuracy. Still some things remain:
"In 1970 the radars at Olenegorsk and Skrunda, and an associated command centre were accepted for service. According to Podvig (2002) it seems they were positioned to identify missile launches from NATO submarines in the Norwegian and North Seas." Need comma after 1970. Also where was the associated command center. A comma is also needed after the 2002 enclosed in parentheses.

Done the centre was at Solnechnogorsk. Secretlondon (talk) 20:35, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"A version of this radar was built at the Sary Shagan test site..." Remember to wikilink all geographic mentions.

Done but how many times in an article is appropriate? It isn't the first mention of Sary Shagan test site. Secretlondon (talk) 20:35, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The image is good, so once the issues are addressed/fixed, this section will pass.

Sorry for not clarifying that only initial mentions of geographical locations should be linked. — Preceding unsigned comment added by QatarStarsLeague (talkcontribs) 04:58, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dnepr

[edit]

"An improved array was designed which covered 60 degrees rather than 30. The first Dnepr radar was built at Balkhash as a new radar, cell 5. It entered service on 12 May 1974.[2] The second was a new early warning station at Sevastopol. New Dneprs were also built at Mishelevka and another at Skrunda, and then one at Mukachevo." Plese wikilink all geographic mentions.
Other than that, this section passes.

Done But I again ask how many times it is appropriate to have the same wikilink in one article. Secretlondon (talk) 20:39, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Only the initial mention need be linked. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 05:00, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Technical details

[edit]

I will be stopping here to allow you deference to fix the outstanding issues. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 02:55, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ready to start again!
"At each end of the two arrays there is a set of transmitting and receiving equipment." Comma after arrays.

 Done Secretlondon (talk) 10:41, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Beyond that, we are good!

Current status

[edit]

"The station in Balkhash remains the only Dnepr operational outside Russia." Please clarify for readers where Balkash is located.

 Done Kazakhstan. Secretlondon (talk) 10:41, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That completes it. The review is over, and after these issues are addressed, I will pass it. QatarStarsLeague (talk) 05:04, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wonderful! Thank you. Secretlondon (talk) 10:41, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations! QatarStarsLeague (talk) 20:45, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
