Preparation for GAN

At present the lead is used as a "classification" section. I would remove all except the first sentence and create a section to overview the different forms of communication in prose - four types = four descriptive paragraphs.

There are far too many bulleted lists for an encyclopedia article.

I would like to see at least a brief History section, if possible.

The article does a good job of cataloguing different means of communication, but does not indicate very well who might use each, or why - and what advantages or disadvantages there may be for each type.

As a rule of thumb, each paragraph should have at least one citation.

When all the sections are done, then it's time to write the lead and summarise the main points of each section, e.g. "There are many distinct forms of diver communications, using signals, voice, text, or video, each of which may have variants and carry advantages and disadvantages" rather than a complete list of them.

However, that would be a lot of work, especially as WP:GACR requires that "it addresses the main aspects of the topic", rather than WP:FACR's requirement that it is "comprehensive: it neglects no major facts or details and places the subject in context". Just cleaning up the lead and finding another two dozen sources for the unsourced paragraphs would probably be sufficient for GA, I suspect. --RexxS (talk) 21:51, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, good suggestions. I will give it a go. GA is secondary to improving the article, but it is a way of keeping track.

Some of these may be useful. Not your classic RS, but they have photos and illustrations which suggest probably not bad. Better than nothing?

Those are great finds. In any niche field like this, its history is most often now documented online by amateur enthusiasts (which is one reason why so much of our scuba content is unsourced). Although they may not be conventional RS, as you say, they represent a valuable resource and I wouldn't hesitate to use them either as sources or as external links (per WP:ELYES: "Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that is relevant to an encyclopedic understanding of the subject and cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to copyright issues" because of the images). It is a superb find. There are 259 pages, so we'll need to give readers the page numbers when it's used. I've done a work-around for the two you added today, Peter, but if it gets used more, we may have to consider Harvard-style {{sfn}} and another reference section for the long citation. --RexxS (talk) 18:24, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

It will probably be most useful in the history of underwater diving or the article on standard diving dress. I will add the external link to them.

RexxS, I added external links as discussed and was immediately reverted as spam on Underwater diving, After discussion, the problem of permanence of the item and potential linkrot was raised. User:Jytdog apparently tried to archive it but the attempt crashed due to the size of the pdf. I don't know anything about internet archiving, so have no useful suggestions.
