The load will remain in place and not lower under the force of gravity until the chain is pulled.

This assertion is only true if there is enough friction in the system, which there usually is precisely because of R and r being close the differential force is small but if friction is very low or disappears and or the ratio R/r grows then the system will need a brake or the load will descend. 79.157.230.2 (talk) 17:33, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
