Is Weapons a single?

[edit]

I’ve been thinking a lot lately if Weapons is actually a single. The song was never serviced to radio (from my knowledge) and never received the same amount of promotion as the first 2 singles. What do you think? Jr2468 (talk) 00:24, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I believe we should all be discussing this instead of doing an edit fight. I believe it is somewhere in between since it seems to have obtained the same treatment as "OMG What's Happening". Even though it has not been serviced to Italian radio, it has still received it's own cover art and its own photoshoot. Warner Music Germany describes it as a single. [1] Besides, her label itself has named it a single as well in a press release.[2] Jvaspad (talk) 00:39, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I agree. I think that if Warner themselves have described it as a single then I think it’s fair enough to add it to the singles list. Hopefully it gets radio play eventually 🤞 Jr2468 (talk) 03:00, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For what it's worth I did hear it on Italian radio in my gym, but weirdly enough that only happened once. 2.39.187.112 (talk) 15:03, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I assume the song was planned to be a single but that idea was later scrapped, as there are no sourced dates anywhere of the song impacting radio. In my opinion, it makes more sense that the song is a promotional single, as it never received the same amount of promotion as MYTP & MDB (Music Videos, Remixes, Performances etc). I also believe that Dancing’s Done was planned to be the album’s 2nd promo single but was later sent as a single in select countries. Jr2468 (talk) 16:53, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

We are not going to solve the issue by sharing our personal opinions. Instead, we will go by WP:Reliable sources. A published source must describe "Weapons" as a promo single. Binksternet (talk) 19:44, 11 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't "Cold as Ice" be a promotional single?

[edit]

Atlantic has not posted a press release for "Cold as Ice", unlike the other songs, which have press releases that state that they are singles. I noticed that with Crash by Charli XCX, they posted a press release for every pre-released song except for "Every Rule", which is clearly a promotional single. Atlantic will probably post a press release this Friday where they could state whether "Cold as Ice" is a single or not. Jvaspad (talk) 20:26, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you’re right! I don’t think the song should be listed as a single until an official source confirms it. It makes sense that the song would be a promo single since it was released so close to One Of Us. Jr2468 (talk) 22:29, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that Cold as ice and Ghost are now apparently singles. According to these 2 press releases: https://press.atlanticrecords.com/sites/g/files/g2000014001/files/2023-01/Ava%20Max%20-%20Diamonds%20%26%20Dancefloors%20-%201.27.23.docx

I’m not quite sure why they’re being labelled as singles? I’m not sure if Atlantic even know what a single is at this point. It’s also confusing because Cold As Ice didn’t even have its own press release too. 2A02:C7E:2902:FD00:25F0:8ADA:C7DB:3C95 (talk) 22:53, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Don't add "Ghost". Atlantic's press release announced that it had a "visualizer" (cheap lyric video) which does not make it a single. Binksternet (talk) 16:19, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that Ghost shouldn’t be labelled as a single, but Atlantic labelled it as one in the press release, which according to the people who run this page that’s enough for a song to be a single (e.g. Weapons and One Of Us). I personally believe that they are promotional singles, as they match that criteria and because the term “promotional single” isn’t directly used. 2A02:C7E:2902:FD00:CC9:B071:8C88:22B9 (talk) 16:32, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Singles

[edit]

Two of the songs referred to as singles on this article and their individual articles don't align with WP:SINGLESCRIT. There is no evidence that "Weapons" and "One of Us" were released to radio or released as physical singles in any territories. I am not necessarily saying that they aren't singles, but they are not sourced if they are. A song does not need to be specifically referred to as a "promotional single" by the label/other sources because that term isn't widely used anyway. Rather, there needs to be evidence that official singles are given official single releases. I think that "Maybe You're the Problem", "Million Dollar Baby", and "Dancing's Done" are the only songs that should be listed as singles given the information we have. 71.234.178.78 (talk) 23:10, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As seen in discussions above, Atlantic Records has released press documents about both of those songs. The main page of press releases is here. Click on the song titles to see that the label considers these songs to be singles. Binksternet (talk) 01:09, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not uncommon for digital-only/promotional singles to just be called "singles" by record labels; the term "single" doesn't always imply that a song is officially being promoted as one. According to WP:SINGLESCRIT, "Weapons" and "One of Us" match the criteria for promotional singles. The Atlantic Records documents prove that these song are some form of singles, but they do not specify whether these songs were released to radio or physically, so I don't think they can be classified as official singles. 71.234.178.78 (talk) 06:42, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You will need to show a source calling it a promo single before Wikipedia calls it a promo single. Binksternet (talk) 07:01, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's the opposite of what I'm saying though. The term "promotional single" isn't widely used anymore in the streaming era, so instead, there should be sources proving an official single release. The sixth point under "Factors that may help differentiate promotional singles from regular singles" on WP:SINGLESCRIT suggests that songs only available to download or stream should be categorized as promotional singles. Additionally, it's quite unusual for official singles of the same genre from one album to be released consecutively each month (in this case, "Weapons" in November, "Dancing's Done" in December, and "One of Us" in January). The fact that two of these release dates only come from when they were released for download and streaming also doesn't really help to prove that they're actual singles. 71.234.178.78 (talk) 18:06, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Release date for "Ghost" as a single

[edit]

I do not think "Ghost" was released as a single on May 12, 2023, when its remix was released. Atlantic referred to it as a single in a press release for its visualizer, meaning it could have become a single during its visualizer's release date, March 16, 2023. Besides, that would explain why it started charting on the Finnish and Russian airplay charts on the first week of May. Jvaspad (talk) 21:14, 10 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
