Role of Metrolink

180 mph or 200 mph?
[edit]I know 180 mph is sourced on the page with the IRJ. But everything on the Brightline West website says 200 mph (https://www.brightlinewest.com/overview/project). Including all the reports of the project recently, and interviews with Wes Eden. I know regardless if Brightline chooses the Siemens Velaro Novo/Pioneer 220 or Avelia Liberty/TGV M. It'll be capable of 200 mph+. But what will the service and design speeds be of the line? (I assume the design speed will be around 10/15 mph more than the normal operating speed) ZlatanSweden10 (talk) 21:15, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- One of the recent sources mentions that the speed will be reduced due to some steep grades. I haven't look into it but I wonder if part of the discrepancy is due to an average figure. Cheers, 〜 Adflatuss • talk 23:42, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- I'm glad you mentioned this, I'm unclear on the answer as well. I've added additional citations within that sentence to clarify what the source is for each clause of the sentence. New High Desert Corridor article

Cajon Pass route
[edit]The article seems to imply that the track will follow the I-15 median through the Cajon Pass. While I've never been on that stretch of highway, it seems to me that any highway mountain crossing would be too steep for most conventional rail, let alone high-speed rail. Is this true?

- The quotes I've seen in news sources have been to the effect of "96% in the highway median". I don't necessarily believe them, but that's what they're giving us to cite. I've heard no news of the routing as it specifically relates to the Cajon. Unless you can get something to cite, we sort of have to believe what's written. -MJ (talk) 22:36, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- According to their Environmental Assessment https://railroads.dot.gov/elibrary/brightline-west-cajon-pass-high-speed-rail-environmental-assessment on page 11, it's the highway median except the segment between Oak Hill Road to the north and where the highway lanes rejoin each other near the southbound runaway truck ramp to the south - like 5-ish miles. -MJ (talk) 23:16, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

- The drawings in the EIR appear to have it mostly next to the northbound lanes. I-15 has up to 6% sustained grades, so yes, I also find this whole thing questionable from an engineering perspective. Even a 4% grade is considered extremely steep and quite uncommon for mainline rail; it makes me wonder who they consulted to make these plans. However that’s what the official documents say, and Wikipedia isn’t a place for speculation on whether things will work or not. Only time will tell how this goes I guess.
