Rand, Illinois

[edit]

I took the liberty of removing the phrase "formerly Rand, Illinois" from the beginning of the article. If Des Plaines had been incorporated as Rand at some point, I could see the point in keeping it there, but since that's not the case, it seems to me that the brief designation as Rand would be better stated in a "history" section of the article. Any thoughts? -- Tim D 11:53, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pop Culture

[edit]

I changed the reference in pop culture, that Gacy did his deeds in Des Plaines. I see no reason to advance a misconception. Comments? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cieplinj (talkcontribs) 14:36, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gacy did not live in Des Plaines, and his exploits are not "pop culture" in any event. Please see my entry below under "trivia."

Townships

[edit]

The city limits technically fall into four townships. The largest part of the city is in Maine and is therefore most recognized. Areas west of Mount Prospect Road are in Elk Grove Township. North of Central Road lies in Wheeling Township. A very small section northeast of the intersection of Des Plaines River Road and Central Road is in Northfield Township. Accessing the town websites for Elk Grove and Wheeling will mention parts of corporate Des Plaines in their townships. There is no mention in the Northfield Township website. This area, while in the city limits, is undeveloped with no residents and most likely is overlooked by Northfield. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.226.111.177 (talk) 05:44, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wonderful Article- needs a history section.

[edit]

WOW what a Wonderful Article about Des Plaines. But it needs a history section. Des Plaines has a very rich and colorful history. There are qa great many things that could be added in such a section. A incomplete list would include... 1)The early settlers from the state of Maine. 2)Socrates Rand Settled in Maine Township founding the "town of Rand" which later became known as Des Plaines. Mr Rand also owned the towns saw mill. giving Mill street it's name. Also Rand Road is named after Rand. 3)The coming of the Railroads. It is notable that such a small town in the 1800's had three railroads. All of these railroads meet just west of downtown making a rare junction of three railroads and one highway; with a US highway 14 passing below them. 4)Railroad gondola cars used to be built in Des Plaines. 5)The german settlers who had such productive farms. 6)Des Plaines is notable for having Italian settlers at a time when many small towns of it's size did not have a Italian population. 7)Des Plaines has the Well preserved Methodist Campground. 8)Maryville located in northern Des Plaines has a long history of serving the needs of orphaned and troubled youth. 9)After the Chicago fire, Des Plaines became known for producing bricks used to rebuild. 10)Des Plaines incorperated the village of Riverview Illinois in 1925. Railroad gondola cars used to be built in Riverview. A notable resident of Riverview was Julius Krec who owned a factory that made colored chalks. First they were called Color-Ons, Then they were called Kreh-ons (Named after Mr Krec), Then finally sold as Crayons. Mr Krec's Crayons were made out of Chalk not wax. 11)Des Plaines was active in the Passage of Prohibition in the 1920's. 12)In the 1920's the gangster Rodger Touhy called Des Plaines home. Tough spent 25 years in prison for a crime he was totally innocent of. 13)In the great depression the CCC built the dams on the Des Plaines river and many of the sidewalks and curbs. 14)During WW2 many people from Des Plaines were working at Orchard Place/Douglas Field building airplanes Then after the war this became O Hara airport. 15) After WW2 the two Tollways were built, also there was a construction boom. In 1956 the town of Orchard Place was incorparated into Des Plaines. Orchard Place was a farming town which was known for growing produce, growing Roses but was mostly known for growing apples. 16) Des Plaines was always known to flood throughout it's history; but in recent years there have been many flood control projects to stop flooding. 17) More recently Des Plaines has seen more improvements downtown, The building of many condos and hotels. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.141.167.45 (talk) 21:53, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That would be nice, but we need a good source for the information. Someone dig up a link please. Briguy9876 (talk) 06:33, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

→Ive added a History Section from DesPlaines.org, but I dont know how to`cite resources. So I put the link at the bottom od the section. Anyone who knows how to move the page down to Resourses, please do so.--Briguy9876 (talk) 00:08, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You could add <ref>[http://www.desplaines.org/Community/History.asp History] at DesPlaines.org</ref> after your text.
However, copying text from another site and pasting it into Wikipedia is a violation of copyright, so I had to revert your edit. Please rewrite the material in your own words. - Fayenatic (talk) 13:08, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I've added a trivia tag to the article and intend to dispense with this list. I will incorporate what important information I can into the main article, and ask you do the same. I would like to see the references to Gacy go to his own article. He is dead and gone and the City of Des Plaines is a minor player in that saga at best.Nickrz (talk) 23:07, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Places of Worship - Is this notable, or just linkspam/advertising?

[edit]

The article now contains a list of 15 places of worship, with external links to most of them. Someone has also added a template indicating that the list needs expansion. Unless places of worship are architecturally or historically significant (say, the Bahai Temple in Wilmette, Illinois), I don't see why they are notable, or why Wikipedia should effectively be advertising them. Should we have a list of "Restaurants" and links to hundreds of restaurant websites? This strikes me as non-notable linkspam. I think the whole section should be deleted. Krakatoa (talk) 11:40, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am inclined to agree. If this article were about Chicago, or even a smaller city like St. Louis or such, it would be impossible to list this information. I do not suspect that smaller towns are exempt, though as you noted, any places of worship which may be unique or historically notable could be mentioned. LonelyBeacon (talk) 15:46, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Deleted - spam. No other city has this, why make an exception here?108.23.147.17 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:04, 16 April 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Citation

[edit]

Not sure how to cite things on an iPad but for the industry sections I edited the source of information I got from here: http://www.desplaines.org/DocumentCenter/View/2481 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.23.169.177 (talk) 18:34, 1 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
