[edit]Pandermochelys(in current article but seemingly unsourced) or Dermochelyoidae(see Ocepechelon cladogram)? Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 21:34, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
- Your problem here is competing methods of cladistic nomenclature. I imagine Pandermochelys is from something of Joyce' work, not sure which. Without a few refs to back it up I would run with Dermochelyoidae. We need the papers in question to be sure. Faendalimas talk 01:42, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

Pandermochelys?
[edit]According to Joyce et al. (2004), "‘Pandermochelys’ refers to the panstem that includes Dermochelys (orig. Testudo) coriacea (Vandellius, 1761), but not Chelonia (orig. Testudo) mydas (Linnaeus, 1758) or any of the other valid species listed in Appendix 1. ‘Dermochelyidae’ refers to the most inclusive clade containing Dermochelys (orig. Testudo)coriacea (Vandellius, 1761), but not the fossil taxon Protostega gigas Cope, 1871a, Chelonia (orig. Testudo) mydas (Linnaeus, 1758), or any other valid species listed in Appendix 1.".
Joyce et al. also say that "Should ‘Dermochelyidae’ and ‘Pandermochelys’ prove objectively synonymous, we specify that Pandermochelys be given priority in order to maintain nomenclatural consistency with other clade names...".
Evers et al. (2019) moved Protostegidae to the base of Panchelonioidea, making Dermochelyidae and Pandermochelys objectively synonymous. Does this mean that this Wikipedia article should be moved to Pandermochelys? --Paranaja (talk) 12:21, 18 July 2019 (UTC)
