Overly detailed
[edit]@DGG: You added Template:Overly detailed on this article today. Since the article is fairly short and I wrote it myself from scratch recently, I hope we can quickly develop a consensus here on how to resolve that issue you raised. What content in the article do you think is overly detailed? Dugan Murphy (talk) 20:54, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
1. the quotations-- perhaps the first 2 are sufficient 2. the list of members, wwhich is large part reproduces the sections on membership and organization. Doing it one way or another is sufficient.
In addition, the full name is used too often-- most of the time it should be "the club" (lower case), and "Delphinian A.B" should just be A.B., when it's clear from previous content that he's a member. .
It's an extremely nice essay and I congratulate you for it. --the only problem is to make it look more like a Wikipedia article,. DGG ( talk ) 22:17, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the detail! I removed the block quotes after the first two, removed the prose text that duplicates information in the table, uncapitalized "club" where appropriate, and removed the extraneous references to members as Delphians. That should take care of all the issues you raised, so I'm going to remove the Template:Overly detailed. Dugan Murphy (talk) 18:14, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

- ... that the Delphian Club designated John Neal as Magister Facetiarum of the Office of the Joke Master General? Source: Pages 77–78 of The Life and Works of John Neal says "After the first year, Neal is, of course, regularly designated by his 'clubicular' name of Jehu O'Cataract. He also acquired several offices. On December 20, 1817, the Club voted 'That there shall be, in the Delphian Club, an office to be called the office of Joke Master General, or Magister Facetiarum.... Jehu O'Cataract was appointed to fill said office."

Policy compliance:
- Adequate sourcing: -
Generally fine, but I couldn't quite verify "Neal's clubicular name recognized his prodigious literary output and others' were often derived from their personalities or professions." Appleby refers to Neal's clubicular name ("O'Cataract") but does not mention the Delphian Club as far as I can see. - Neutral:
- Free of copyright violations, plagiarism, and close paraphrasing: -
There is some WP:CLOPping from "The Delphian Club", but that should be fine because it recently entered the public domain (at least if public domain in the United States is to be believed). You might want to flag that with {{PD-notice}}. - Other problems:
Hook eligibility:
- Cited: -
I have to AGF on this because, despite my access to a university library, I don't have access to the relevant thesis. Unsurprisingly, a Google search for "Magister Facetiarum" does not turn anything useful up. - Interesting:

Overall: A lovely read—thank you. Issues flagged above should be fairly easy to address, I think. This should be a quirky if the promoter can manage it. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 23:44, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
- @AleatoryPonderings: Thanks for the review and for the edits to the article – especially for catching that one citation with the wrong page number. Much appreciated. You're right about my use of the Appleby citation. I just replaced that citation with another that better expresses what is in that sentence (now two sentences because of some copy edit). I also added a {{PD-notice}} to the Uhler reference, as you recommended. I believe all your issues have now been addressed! Since you're assuming good faith on my use of the Richards dissertation, I believe you'll need to replace your comment there with "y" so this nomination can pass. - Thanks for addressing my comments. Good to go from my perspective. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 15:55, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Can review Eddie891 Talk Work 22:46, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Eddie891: Just checking in. Are you still working on this review? Dugan Murphy (talk) 23:16, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- Gah, has it already been ten days! How time flies. Yes, I will make sure to attend to this within the next few days, thanks for the reminder. Eddie891 Talk Work 23:31, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- And my sincere apologies for not being more on top of things. Eddie891 Talk Work 23:31, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
- No problem. Happens to the best of us. Dugan Murphy (talk) 00:03, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- OK, sources all seem reliable, images are licensed OK. Seems relatively comprehensive, at least for GA purposes. Eddie891 Talk Work 01:16, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Some thoughts on prose
- Why is Neal the only member specifically highlighted in the lede?
- My thinking is that Neal is the most famous of the club members, even though he is nevertheless fairly unknown today. Let me know if you have more thoughts on this. Dugan Murphy (talk) 16:34, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- What does "but no more than nine served at a time" 'served' mean in this context?
- I reworded this use of "served" in the lede and in the body. Let me know if still think it's unclear. Dugan Murphy (talk) 16:34, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- "is supposed to be" what does 'supposed' mean in this context? Presumably the members didn't actually think that
- Correct. Let me know if you think my rewording is still unclear. I'll look at the remaining comments in a bit. Dugan Murphy (talk) 16:34, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Why use "hebdomadal" instead of just "weekly"?
- I just added some extra wording to make that more clear. Let me know if it could still improve. Dugan Murphy (talk) 18:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- " regular contributions from members" monetary or literary?
- Literary. I changed the word to "submissions" to make that more clear. Dugan Murphy (talk) 18:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- "Neal's reflected his reputation" maybe say what it was here as well?
- "hen the club flourished most" how so?
- Reworded to say "most active and festive". Dugan Murphy (talk) 18:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Do we know if any of the "prominent men" accepted the offer?
- They didn't. Just added that. Dugan Murphy (talk) 18:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
The character of Mr. Snap is a satire of John Neal and the story "Raising the Wind; or Diddling Considered as One of the Exact Sciences" is a satire of Neal's writing for the club and later in The Yankee.
how is this relevant to the delpgian club?
- Reworded. Let me know if the connection is still unclear. Dugan Murphy (talk) 18:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not sure any of the examples besides Poe's could really be construed as mentions in popular culture since it's all members of the group-- maybe they would be better integrated into the 'history' section? Maybe not
- I'm inclined to agree. I've integrated the non-Poe content from this section into the history section, which led to me reordering a few things in that section. I think this is an improvement. Dugan Murphy (talk) 18:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Perhaps some more to follow. Eddie891 Talk Work 01:27, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- Great. Thanks for the comments! I think this article is better as a result. Let me know if you have more. Dugan Murphy (talk) 18:02, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- OK, this would seem to meet the GA criteria now, passing. Eddie891 Talk Work 22:55, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
