Independence?

[edit]

Isn´t independence the same as state sovereignity? There is another article which states that that Ukraine became independent on 24 August 1991. --Vitzque (talk) 12:19, 5 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No, sovereignty and independence are somewhat different. Enivid (talk) 06:48, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And what is the difference? How can they be sovereign if they are not independent? --Vitzque (talk) 09:22, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Did Ukraine intend to become a neutral state with no military alliances?

[edit]

The computer (at a College Library) timed-out to Reference 2 in the Wikipedia Article. However, a English version of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine is at:

  https://www.usubc.org/site/recent-news/road-to-independence--declaration-of-state-sovereignty-of-ukraine-on-july-16--1990

and has the statement quoted in Reference 2: "The Ukrainian SSR solemnly declares its intention of becoming a permanently neutral state that does not participate in military blocs and adheres to three nuclear free principles: to accept, to produce and to purchase no nuclear weapons." I find no reference to being neutral or non-aligned or not particpat8ing in military blocs in the Ukrainian Declaration of Independence or the first Ukrainian Constitution of 1996. Doesn't this show that there were differences of opinions on this subject? Research question: Are (were) there polls that reflected public opinion on the topic of alignment during the period (July 1990 - coup overthrowing the Yanukovych Presidency) and subsequently prior to the recognition by Russia of the Donetsk and Luhansk Peoples' Republics in 2014? It was just a deception by the Ukrainian nationalists. Of course, they wanted to join NATO because of the anti-Russian sentiment. But at first they tried to hide it. 95.25.23.115 (talk) 08:50, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
