Talk:Deaths in December 2008

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bearing in mind WP:NPOV, we report deaths here, we do not judge the merits of those reported. It is also long-standing custom that even if those reported are initially redlinked as not having an article about them on Wikipedia, this may change. Many articles on the encyclopedia have been written because of deaths reported on these pages; we usually wait a month before making judgments on whether the entries remain. Accordingly, premature remove against consensus, and especially repeated deletion, is regarded as vandalism. --Rodhullandemu 22:28, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Then we must remove the word "Notable" from the top of the page, as the death in question is not notable by any stretch of the imagination. As many of us understand this page, it is supposed to highlight the passing of known and important people, hence the word "notable." The execution of a serial rapist and murderer is not notable unless that person happened to have done some other major work in his lifetime, or his death (like that of the young man in Greece who's shooting caused several days of rioting). Subsequently, the removal is not vandalism but instead staying within the letter and spirit of the page in question. If we bend the word "notable" in such a way, then we need add every single death that happens worldwide as reported in the press, regardless of who or how, and remove them later. That's probably in the tens of thousands per day. 216.244.32.252 (talk) 22:57, 8 December 2008 (UTC)Robert Thompson[reply]

Move proposal

[edit]
Oppose. Are you sure you understand how this page works? Deaths in 2008 trancludes the pages for individual months in 2008 and can be seen as a place-holder for them. If you look at the contents box, you will bee how it works. --Rodhullandemu 16:33, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. This article has worked fine as it is for 6 years now. Plus it will be moved in just 6 more days anyhow..... Williamb (talk) 00:43, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. I'm not sure that the studentloans4life has understood that some of these comments are from other parts of 2008. The December 2008 specific references will be moved to that specific location soon as will the main article. I don't think there could possibly be any other view-point.Fol de rol troll (talk) 23:10, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can somebody add links to his deaths in the article? I can't find any. Pandyu (talk) 16:25, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Forget this. I see the obituaries. Pandyu (talk) 17:20, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Smith (police officer)

[edit]

This keeps being deleted on the basis that there is no existing article for him, and therefore he is not currently notable; however, the history of this page shows that articles tend to be generated out of reports here, mostly because until their deaths are reported, nobody considers it worth creating such an article, and that is why redlinks tend to be tolerated for up to a month here. In this case, whereas it may well be a WP:BLP1E death, we have no way of determining currently whether this will develop, and how. The report of his death here may well act as a catalyst for future articles, but that's no reason to fly in the face of custom. --Rodhullandemu 00:20, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I have said before, as well as WWGB, all criminals are to be treated as non-notables until an article is created for them. We cannot open this page up to every murderer, and Smith's case is not fundamentally different than any other. Star Garnet (talk) 00:35, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Probably worth a re-read of WP:NPOV, then. That isn't the way it should work. This page, although being supposedly a report of notable deaths, in practice acts as something of a staging-post from which many entries go on to be fully-fledged articles. To automatically assume non-notability for criminals, unless they are obviously and hopelessly non-notable (in which case there would not be a reliable source for their death in the first place), is biased. Sure, if in a month notability is not established, nuke it. Until then, who knows what will crawl out of the woodwork? --Rodhullandemu 00:45, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Name display

[edit]

Unless there's an obvious reason not to (such as the existence of a disambiguation term), isn't it customary to list the individual under the name of their Wikipedia article because, in theory at least, that is the name that consensus has determined is their most common one? I bring this up because of a dispute about Eric Charles Twelves Wilson; no one calls him "Eric Wilson", they refer to him by his full name, or E.C.T. Wilson. If I'm incorrect about this, then it is the article name that should be changed, not just piping it to hide it I would think. Cheers, CP 17:04, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but most if not all of the sources and obits refer to him solely by Eric Wilson, it's certainly not normal British practice to use middle names. My take is that the article should be at Eric Wilson (soldier) or something similar. - fchd (talk) 17:30, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It should be renamed then, absolutely. Aside from the fact that Wilson is poorly named though, the consensus is to list the individual by the name of their Wikipedia article though, right? Cheers, CP 17:36, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
