[edit]Proposed Correction
"During his short tenure, Barkley passed legislation establishing a memorial for Wellstone..."
Barkley didn't pass the legislation, the Senate did. Barkley might have introduced and/or sponsored the bill but he didn't pass it. I'd like to change it to read, "During his short tenure, Barkley was instrumental in the Senate's passing legislation establishing a memorial for Wellstone..."

Barkley caused close finish?
[edit]I wanted to further discuss my reversion of Tripodics' edit.
I am the first to admit I know little of Minnesota politics, but my understanding is that Governor Ventura's politics were very sui generis. It seems unwarranted to say without further evidence that Barkley's presence in the race prevented either Franken or Coleman to win handily. Were the Independence Party of Minnesota the "Socialist Party of Minnesota" or the "Conservative Party of Minnesota," sure, but even then we'd want a cite. A better way to describe Barkley's impact might be taken from the Independence Party's page itself: "His candidacy had a significant impact on a race in which the leading candidates, incumbent Senator Norm Coleman and challenger Al Franken, were separated by only 215 votes." YLee (talk) 21:28, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
- I've again deleted language that implied that Barkley caused the ultra-close finish. Unless and until a reliable source states that Barkley's voters would have gone to either Coleman or Franken, we cannot make this claim. Further, because any such source would by necessity use imperfect means like public polling as evidence, we would not be able to make a more definitive statement than something like "Barkley's presence in the race likely caused . . . [17][18]." (my emphasis) YLee (talk) 00:36, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
- I'm going to take my own advice up above and use the language from the Independence Party of Minnesota article to describe Barkley's impact on the Senate race. YLee (talk) 00:38, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
