Brooke "Surname"
[edit]Traced back to Scotland, Kirkcudbrightshire County in the south near England and the Irish sea. One of the first counties to be overrun by the English in the 11th century. This eventually caused the expulsion of many "Brooke's" to convert from Catholic to Protestant religion. The ones that held their faith were killed or made an exodus to other countries such as Ireland. Although the most famous "Brooke" in Ireland was a staunch Protestant, the others were once again forced to leave for fear of being tied to "Basil Stanlake Brooke" thought to be the most hardline Anti-Catholics to command the Ulster-Unionist Party. The "Brooke" Catholics who remained in Ireland fled to America during both the Great Famine, and the war of 1916. Mostly settling in the East of the United States have spread as far as California. Ohter "Brooke's" have made well becoming English. Arthur Brooke founded "Brooke Bond & Co." a tea distributer in Manchester.
