David Lloyd Leisure
[edit]A quick thought that might prompt some more info for the page. Did David Lloyd the cricketer give his name to the health and leisure club David Lloyd Leisure? I don't know myself.
- No, that was David Lloyd the tennis player. Cymruisrael 14:00, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
Quotes
[edit]I've removed the quotes as a bundle of useless trivia with no sources and indication of importance. If they're to be replaced, provide sources and put them in context.--Nydas(Talk) 07:43, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm sure any fan who's watched Sky cricket for a while could say they've heard all of those, because I have. Porterjoh 22:20, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
- That's not exactly a reliable source. See also Wikipedia:Avoid trivia sections in articles.--Nydas(Talk) 07:49, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
Well I'm sorry but I disagree. Millions of viewers across the world have heard those quotes. Porterjoh 10:43, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
- Verifiability is a core Wikipedia policy. If you are unable to provide reliable sourcing for the quotes, they should go.--Nydas(Talk) 11:34, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
- I have to agree. The quotes as they stand are poor - they are out of context and unsourced. David is a very quotable character and so there perhaps should be a couple of choice examples with source so people can get the idea. For those live off the cuff remarks, although millions have heard them, that isn't enough for verification. As a minimum we'd need the participants of the match he was commentating on and a rough date but ideally something like this where his comments are mentioned elsewhere in editorial print or a book title and author. I would suggest leaving in the "Could you take away the pain but leave the swelling?" quote with context (ie just after being hit in the knackers by Thomson) with a link to it on Youtube for verification, and perhaps 2 or 3 others tops. Other stuff should go to wikiquote. --LiamE 14:36, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
I notice all the quotes have been removed, but not added to Wikiquote...endless quotes out of context are boring and meaningless, but notable quotes should stay e.g. like the one suggested above, although I was also looking for the "He's flown like a gazelle" quote, which has been widely discussed on Guardian Sport, YouTube, etc. as I caught up with it even though I no longer live in the UK and watch Sky!
More broadly, I work as a translator, and use wikipedia occasionally as a background resource on any obscure French artists/well-known figures I am translating about. Again, quotes are often very important here (e.g. for understanding a play on words); could someone please point me in the direction where I could make this point to some of the more exclusionist zealots who wish to restrict Wikipedia entries to minimal biographical details, and none of the colour which gets requoted ad infinitum in other sources (however prestigious or otherwise)? Many thanks, DERW1981 62.161.101.147 11:57, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- Erm... if the "other sources" which you speak of are used to cite the "colour" then that is fine. The users above were discussing "colour" that had no citations, and they are correct in stating that uncited material should be removed from wikipedia's biographies. There are no "exclusionist zealots", just people following a policy you ought to read up on. :) SGGH speak! 19:59, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
Bumble
[edit]Origin of the nickname? Lugnuts 17:04, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
- Because his profile, involving a prominent proboscis, is not unlike that of animation characters called 'Bumblies' featured in one of the late Michael Bentine's childrens' television programmes Bill Frindall BBC Sport —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.224.225.114 (talk) 13:21, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
