I agree. Engwicht would like to make streets into colorful spaces that make artistic statements, morel ike playgrounds. Many people are tired of streets as "traffic sewers" and find this approach refreshing, but on the other hand if a street is to be used for travel at more than walking speed, whether in motor vehicles or on bicycles, such treatment rates as distracting and poses a hazard. The concept of "shared space" which Engwicht advocates amounts to this: pedestrians walk every which way in the street, and nobody on wheels can safely travel at more than walking speed for fear of colliding with a pedestrian. Granted, streets are esthetically unappealing, but on the other hand, cities could not exist without transportation modes that run afoul of Engwicht's prescriptions.
