muscle v fascia
[edit]Contraction of the dartos muscle actually causes wrinkling of the scrotal skin, since the dartos muscle is essentially a fascial layer directly underneath the skin composed predominantly of muscle fibers which thickens the integumentary layer with contraction. This thickening of the skin correlates with a lower surface area and preservation of heat.
This article refers to the dartos as both a unit of smooth muscle and as fascia, a continuation of Scarpa's fascia. It would be beneficial for students/readers to have this clarified and perhaps see the differences where the dartos is a fascial layer, and where it is smooth muscle.Xflipx (talk) 20:27, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
- presently the only discussion of muscular action is scrotal elevation. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1046/j.1464-410x.1999.0830s1034.x/pdf from a 90s urology paper mentions that most of the muscle is in the prepuce though. This seems worth citing to add more of a focus on that. ScratchMarshall (talk) 06:46, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
