Location of this group
[edit]If this article purports to be encyclopedic, why is not a single word of the current version devoted to the possible location/headquarters of this group, and which foreign power(s) may be supporting its efforts? This has been reported on in the mainstream media. Source 1 Source 2 173.88.246.138 (talk) 01:19, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- The article does mention that their malware does not target former Soviet countries which is about all any one knows currently, we could say they are "Maybe Russian" if you like, but that isn't very encyclopaedic. The American president has said the group does not seem to be supported by any foreign power which aligns with what the group its self says. State backed groups generally tend not to use ransomware. Thank you, I just saw Biden on TV (footage from May 13, 2021) stating his belief that the hacking group is probably based in Russia. 173.88.246.138 (talk) 23:38, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
Affected countries
[edit]The statement by Acronis that DarkSide ransomware attacks only English-speaking countries is demonstrably false and contradicts information from other sources. Eugalt (talk) 01:46, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
The claim that DarkSide "pioneered" ransomware-as-a-service model is incorrect - it existed long before they had emerged. It is also not entirely correct to characterize affiliates as "intermediaries". Providers of RaaS do not aim to attack anyone in particular. They sell/rent their products to their subscribers, who then use it against targets of their choice (within the restrictions imposed by the provider).
The wording implies that hacking groups are mostly state-sponsored. This is incorrect - most of them are for profit criminal organizations. Eugalt (talk) 02:06, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
"specifically, DarkSide's ransomware avoids targeting computers for which the default language setting is Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, or Belarusian" - there is nothing "specific" about this 4 languages. There are 17 language code identifiers in the exclusion list. Eugalt (talk) 13:50, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
