Geography

[edit]

I'm currently going through Wikidata entries for (mostly) localities in Otago to complete them by adding coordinates, the district in which it is located, and the NZ Gazetteer ID number if any of those are missing. Once I had completed the Wikidata entries, I imported them into Google Earth (where I have boundaries for territorial authorities and regions). It turns out that many of the entries located in the Waitaki District are wrong and this is one of them. The Waitaki District straddles two regions (Canterbury and Otago). Most of the localities within Waitaki District that are in Canterbury were recorded as being in the Otago Region. What may have added to the confusion is that the regional boundary was traditionally the Waitaki River. Yet another complication is that LINZ has "survey districts" and the vast majority of Waitaki District (with the exception of Lake Ōhau) falls into their Otago district.

In the case of Danseys Pass, the boundary between Waitaki and Central Otago districts go across the pass. Whilst the process is precise, it doesn't lend itself for normal referencing. Schwede66 20:02, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
