Hatnote
[edit]I was just on the page for Daniel Parke Custis and noted that there was material in the article that was about this particular Parke. Since the names are remarkably similar I'm going to put a hatnote at the top of each article so that this isn't re-added. Tokyogirl79LVA (talk) 14:05, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
Slaves
[edit]I'm surprised there's any real argument about a Virginia gentleman of this time period owning slaves - it would have been quite surprising if he had not. But since it does seem that it is being disputed, see here under the entry for his son-in-law William Byrd, who acquired slaves from Parke's estate after the latter's death. Or from wikisource, see this reference to him freeing a slave in his will. PohranicniStraze (talk) 23:09, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
- Edited to add: the wikisource item above could possibly be referring to Daniel Parke Sr, rather than Jr, since it doesn't specify. But, from the collection of the Library of Virginia, see here (search for Parke). This one includes specific dates, so it is clearly referring to Parke Jr as owning some number of slaves. PohranicniStraze (talk) 23:20, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
- Perhaps someone could add these to the article. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:24, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Comments
[edit]Hi. Just one style note, otherwise I like this and think you'll reach GA. Three phrases stopped me flat. Why are these not active voice?
- instead being appointed
- his father dying
- being elected to
For example, to say "His father died" is straightforward. -SusanLesch (talk) 23:49, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @SusanLesch:. Thank you for your comments- I think I've addressed them all. If you know anyone interested in doing a GA review (hint hint), please let me know. Regards, Dabberoni15 (talk) 23:11, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi. Sorry my time is spoken for for the next few months. Thanks. -SusanLesch (talk) 15:01, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

It looks like this article has been waiting for a while, so I'll go ahead and get started on it. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 06:16, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- It is reasonably well written.
- a (prose, spelling, and grammar): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
- Parke's name is used a lot; it might help readability to replace some instances with "he" or "him".
- It might be confusing to have Churchill's name change with his title. Would it be possible to just refer to him as "Churchill" or "Marlborough" and remove the note?
- Is there a reason why his attempted political career in England is listed under his personal life instead of chronologically in "Early life"?
Upon learning of his autocratic rule in the Leeward Islands prior to his murder, English government officials quietly supported Douglas' decision not to pursue charges against Parke's murderers
– This should immediately follow the sentence about deciding not to pursue charges. The illegitimate Lucy
– This wording seems strange. Perhaps "Lucy, his illegitimate daughter," or something like that.came to a head
– Avoid idioms.
- a (prose, spelling, and grammar): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
- It is factually accurate and verifiable.

- Well-organized bibliography, all sources are books that appear to be reliable. Only result on WP:EARWIG search was a 0.0% match. Unfortunately, I could not access the most used source (Falkner 2004). I was, however, able to check the article against several of its other sources (Clark, Falkner 2014, Fischer, Harris, McArver, O'Shaughnessy, Webb, and Zacek) to make up for this.
- Falkner 2014 presents the origin of his rank as a fact. Is there something in Falkner 2004 that suggests it should be attributed to the author rather than stated in wikivoice?
- Where in Falkner 2014 does it say that he
did make several attempts to acquire an officer's commission in the English Army while in Europe, though these were consistently rebuffed
- It's unclear what's supporting what with the Clark and Lockridge citations.
Best known for his military service in Europe
– According to whom?

- It is broad in its coverage.
- a (major aspects): b (focused):
- No excessive detail. Some aspects might need additional coverage.
Parke's nascent political career was rife with tensions as he engaged in several disputes and feuds with other politicians, eventually moving back to England in 1701.
– What sort of disputes and feuds? What did they disagree about, and how did it affect Parke's career?- Can more be said about Parke's
campaign to restore the rule of law to the region
? What measures did he take? I see one in Webb, in that he enlisted the support of Michael Ayon as provost marshal. - Falkner 2014 says
Parke abandoned his family in Virginia, going to live in London with his mistress
. Could more be said about this? - It might be significant to mention that Parke was the only English colonial governor to ever be assassinated.
- No excessive detail. Some aspects might need additional coverage.
