DEV?

[edit]

What the hell is this DEV shit all about. How about explaining what it bloody means?

Explained in the first sentence Andrewgprout (talk) 15:29, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I too was surprise to see this unfamiliar prefix, and wonder if it is really appropriate in the title of the article. It's not really explained in the first sentence. Presumably it stands for "Diesel Electric Vessel". It does not seem to be a generally accepted prefix for ships. It might be better to call the article something like "Cook Strait Ferry Arahura", and possibly just add something in the body of the article about the eccentric prefix which the owners seem to use. --Epipelagic (talk) 12:59, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
DEV is indeed strange but only as strange as TEV (Wahine) and GMV (Aramoana, Aranui). It seems to be a convention to name articles using the ship's commonly used descriptive prefix. Perhaps this could be explained better but this article follows the structure of most other ship articles including the TEV and the GMV ones mentioned. Somewhat surpringly to me is that there is no real overall logic to applying such prefixes and these are not registered as part of a ships name so there is no real official recognition of these prefixes. It could be better to name the article Arahura (ship) or maybe Arahura (Ferry). But I think this would require a general consensus that this was a good thing to do Wikipedia wide before it was applied in this case.Andrewgprout (talk) 21:44, 6 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Retired

[edit]

I have been reverting an IP user continually putting retired in the info box as Arahura's status. While it is true that the ship has recently been retired from Interislander service the ship itself is not retired as it will be sold (this is referenced) and undoubtedly continue on in service in another part of the world for years to come. Not sure if I'm being overly pedantic here? Andrewgprout (talk) 09:26, 5 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
