Unreliable source

[edit]

Recent edits by RickWMacM are based on the book MacMillan, Kathleen M. From Sword to Pen: The Life and Works of the Honourable Cyrus J. MacMillan (1878-1953) (Penumbra Press, 2023, ISBN 9781897323472). The reliability of this source is questionable. Based on the publisher's website, this is a "familial history", written by a person described as a distant relative. Kathleen M. MacMillan is not identifiably a notable historian, nor is Penumbra Press identifiably a publisher of scholarly history. I would ask RickWMacM to address these concerns. Kathleen M. MacMillan is my sister and I was a major editorial consultant for her book, From Sword to Pen. I am a retired writer/editor, having published thousands of magazine articles and encyclopedia entries in the field of music for four decades. Kathleen is not a "notable historian" but she is a very experienced researcher, having completed a Ph.D. in health sciences and two Master's degrees. Her research over many years in completing From Sword to Pen, including much time spent with McGill Archives resources, was impeccable and very detailed. I suggest you read the book and its 650 citations. RickWMacM (talk) 18:44, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@RickWMacM: Your sister may well be an accomplished researcher in health sciences; history is a very different field. As family members, you and your sister have a conflict of interest regarding the subject; it is in your interest to highlight positive aspects of Cyrus' life, and therefore your sister's book may not be the best choice of a sole source for all this material.
