[edit]Although a google search for "cycles per byte" turns up a ton of results, I couldn't really find a good definition of it listed anywhere. For now, I've chosen the IBM article that uses the phrase itself in a decent context. An ideal way to reference the phrase would likely be to find a good email from the NIST-hash mailing list since they tend to use the "CPB" acronym quite often.fintler (talk) 14:36, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
Acronym "CPB" Usage by Cryptographers
[edit]There was an edit made that removed the "CPB" acronym stating that cryptographers don't use it. I disagree. Take a look at the nist-hash mailing list and check the recent postings (December-January of 2008-2009) of djb, Schneier, and others to see a few mentions of "cpb" (usually in lowercase form). fintler (talk) 13:26, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'd be more impressed by cites from papers or some other less casual form of writing. ciphergoth (talk) 22:51, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
- From a google scholar search, I can see the acronym used in [1], [2], and [3] as refering to "cycles per byte". HOWEVER, from that same search, I now also see "CPB" used a few times to refer to the phrase "controlled permutation boxes" such as in [4]. I'll leave the article as is for now, since I really don't know what wikipedia policy to refer to for this one. :-) fintler (talk) 15:41, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- Interesting, thanks! I note that every example writes it in all lower case, and two of them have many of the same authors. We should maybe note this usage in the article, but I'd prefer to stay away from it on the rest of Wikipedia - it's clearly not in widespread use in crypto, and it's better to use a term that might be understood by one unfamiliar with it without clicking on the link. Does that seem about right to you? ciphergoth (talk) 16:26, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds good. :-) fintler (talk) 17:47, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
- "Acronym"? The WP search function, with lower case "cpb", redirects to this page. Can someone either make the search return search results, redirect to a disambig page, or this (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/CPB) page? Please? I wouldn't have thought WP search would be case-sensitive. 173.57.29.212 (talk) 13:59, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Fixed, cpb now redirects to CPB -- intgr [talk] 19:11, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
