February 2006

At some point this page will have to be broken up into multiple pages, but not yet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Powella (talkcontribs) 17:31, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

It isn't anywhere near long enough to consider that now. NicM 18:20, 1 February 2006 (UTC).
I agree, not yet, but if we are going to have sections on "black horse troop" then it will only be a matter of time before we have one for Hockey, Infantry, Band, Polo etc. and then there could be confusing overlap. If we have a section on "Band" do we mean Winter School band or the Summer Camps Naval Band? —Andrew Powell 19:24, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
I think it is probably best to try to avoid too much uninteresting detail about the sports (a lot of schools have hockey teams, covering the key points can't require a full section of its own), but then I don't really know anything about the school. Maybe there is enough interesting stuff to say about each sport to justify each having its own subsection: if you can do it, knock yourself out.
IMO the article is a little unbalanced now anyway, there is very little text about the school itself and a lot of sometimes tedious detail about the camps. I think it needs four substantial sections on:
  • School history (foundation, change to allow girls (why, when, etc), must be a lot of other significant events in >100 years)
  • School organisation (how the kids are split up, who owns and runs it now, funding etc)
  • Sports, clubs and awards (the horse and boat clubs, hockey teams, school band etc)
  • The summer camps (history, summary of options and organisation, etc)
And a good lead-in, see WP:LEAD. Oh, and it needs sources :-). NicM 19:55, 2 February 2006 (UTC).
Again, I agree. It is always hard to see stuff get cut out but you do have a point.
  • I tried to add some sources to the page for the Lacrosse champ references but I must apologize about the formatting. I went from one wiki help page to another. If I see one then I think I can fix the others or at least do it better in the future.
  • I couldn't find the reference for 2002 but am working on it.
I like your section ideas. I agree that they should be added first :) —Andrew Powell 20:22, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
I think i have something but I think my information is protected by copyright... I will try to find something to add. --Roged 00:33, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Not all notable "former students" were students some were campers only. The school refers to all of these people as alumni. Is the term "Alumni" ambiguous somehow? —Andrew Powell 20:26, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

No, but it's better to use simple and common words where possible rather than less common. I wouldn't call someone who just attended a camp an alumnus anyway (alumnus just means "former student" in any case so if one is inaccurate, so is the other). Maybe "Former students and camp attendees" if you want to be strictly accurate. For source templates, see WP:CITET. Wikipedia has far too many help pages, you are often better just looking at how other articles (WP:FA is a good place to start for examples) do it. NicM 20:58, 2 February 2006 (UTC).
Thank you Nick. I have learned a lot from working this page powella 21:17, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Culver calls all these people alumni because up until the late 70's the summer program sported a pretty rigid 8-week curriculum and was referred to as a "summer school." students took classes in navigation, maritime law, and also some fun stuff too. In the late 70's i think enrollment started to be a problem so they started playing up the camp aspect and toning down the instructional elements.bflora 3-19-06 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.225.161.141 (talkcontribs) 17:55, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Merger Suggestion

For some reason a separate article has been created for "Culver Military Academy". This is really the same school. Now officially "The Culver Academies", I believe this article should live here. The old name is important to the school and its history and should be part of this article. Someone looking for "Culver Military Academy" may be interested in information that is here and may be looking for information about the summer camp or the girls program. And on top of that the article on the other page looks like an old version of this page or may have been copied from this page (or the other way around as the other article is actually older) So I am proposing the merger (from that page to this one) Andrew Powell 22:27, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

I think thats a good idea Andrew. -bflora — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.225.161.141 (talkcontribs) 17:39, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Done. The information was already duplicated so just needed to add a redirect to the other page. An admin would have to merge the histories, but I am not sure the benefit because the pages have led almost parallel lives. Andrew Powell 14:30, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

News Information

I am not sure that this article is developed enough to have "new" type items and am not sure that the recently added item follows the wiki standards. I am not trying to say that this particular event is not an important part of Culver's history, just that there is a lot of other things that could and should be written here that I believe have a higher priority. If we do decide to keep the 'news' then it should go in a new section and not added to the summer camps overview section Andrew Powell 18:24, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Where'd all the great info go?

Culver's one of America's few great Military school's with many noteworthy alumni and one of the greatest summer camping programs in the country that attracts royalty and child stars to Indiana summer after summer. I agree the article was a little unwieldy before but this is a travesty. I strongly suggest we bring in a section on the summer camp progam and notable alumni.

Thoughts?Bflora 23:37, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Bflora, it looks like you accidentally deleted some information. ie, notable alumni. If you dig through the history, maybe you can restore the information you deleted plus a lot of other information that was already gone from over edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.80.126.112 (talkcontribs) 00:43, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Give us the name of that German champion

More Stuff to Consider

  • Culver Summer Camps could almost be its own wikipedia entry as a way to make this article cleaner, So could Culver History
  • As to famous alumns: There seem to be a few more missing: Vlasic (pickles), Lay (potato chips), Eckridge (sausage) -- I just noticed a food theme... was the Mess Hall food that bad, back then?
  • Schaeffer (pens), McCulloch (chainsaw/oil), McMillan, Huffington, Giginlet, was Kurt Vonnegut an alum?
  • As to interesting historical events... how about when the cadets helped to save the people of the town of Logansport
  • How about the five Medal of Honor Winners?
  • How about success in college placement and scholarships?
  • Hockey clearly needs to be drawn out separately, as few (if any) schools have dominated their state/sport for so many years and produced so many NHL players
  • Historically, in sports, it might also be interesting to mention the academies Boxing Legacy.
  • How about filmography and references in literature:
    • Tom Brown Goes To Culver, Tom Cruise's haircut in the movie Taps was reportedly researched in the Culver barbershop, Kurt Vonnegut's literary references to the Culver buildings.

Where is Culver Historian Bob Hartman when you need him???  ;) — Preceding unsigned comment added by BMcCJ (talkcontribs) 04:20, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Bob Hartman is here now

I've just started and stories will be posted as I learn how to use Wikipedia. Be patient. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BobHartman (talkcontribs) 20:23, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Tone

Some of the content in this article sounds more like an advertisement for the school than is befitting a neutral, fact-based article. Passages such as "while affording library patrons a scholarly atmosphere and idyllic view of Lake Maxinkuckee," talking about how the program will improve personal confidence, or debating on which buildings improve the ethos of the school are not encyclopedic in nature and rather sound like endorsements which may be found in a brochure for the school rather than content appropriate for Wikipedia. Most of the content in the article is sound and based on valid sources but without a more encyclopedic tone the article will have no credibility. Furthermore, due to Wikipedia's policy on Conflict-of-interest editing on Wikipedia, it might be helpful for any faculty or staff of the school editing this article to disclose their affiliation in the summary when making any edits, or on the talk page. History

Growing up in Northern Indiana, I can recall stopping at Culver one afternoon and visiting what, to my eight year old eyes, was the most awesome model railroad layout that ever existed. Does anyone associated with the school know of anywhere that model railroad is documented? It would be a valuable addition to the article, but of course it must be sourced. Indiana assessment
  • Class
This article is a Stub because it lacks references, pictures, the Leadership Organization section uses some jargon related to military and doesn't explain Leadership Organization it just states what it is. The athetics section flirts with point of view statements. The Notable Alumini needs to be written in prose. This article is almost at start class.
  • Importance
This article is considered at Mid importance due to its number of notable alumini and notable hockey team.
