Although Cuckfield evidently has a "mayor" it is still only a village - all the quoted websites say so! Otherwise it wouldn't need to have a Parish Council Peter Shearan 10:37, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

True. The mayor is a ceremonial position dating from the 1960s. The election is a fundraising mechanism for local charitable projects and prides itself on being the most corrupt in Britain. --69.229.158.19 01:39, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've lived in Cuckfield for 18 months and no-one I've spoken to in the Village has ever called it "Cookfield". The "cuck" in Cuckfield rhymes with suck. Even people who've lived in the village for years. Where did the author hear people saying "Cookfield"?--195.212.29.67 on 23 March 2007.

My grandmother has lived there for 70 years (and was actually 'mayor' one year), my mother grew up there; they both use 'Cookfield'. In addition

Though Sussex locals wince if you pronounce Chiddingly, Hellingly etc as -lee instead of Lie, and Cuckfield as Cuck instead of Cook.[1]

and

Vowel shifts aren't consistent, either. In Sussex, you pronounce Uckfield as you'd expect, but prefix with a C and you get Cuckfield (cook-field).[2]

I think that is proof--Erp 20:48, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My family has been in Cuckfield since 1976, and the pronunciation has always been cook-field. I have never heard any other. JDAWiseman (talk) 22:10, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

inappropriate link?

[edit]

Is

Independent State of Cuckfield - The community charity responsible for the idiosyncratic system of voting for mayor.

inappropriate? My view is that it falls under the category of "Articles about any organization, person, web site, or other entity should link to the official site if any". Admittedly the Independent State of Cuckfield isn't the main article but the mayoral election is discussed. Or should the link be included in the body of the article?--Erp 00:13, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

The original wording of this article contained an inadequate example of pronunciation I'm afraid. It said that it is pronounced 'Cookfield' and that 'Cookfield' doesn't rhyme with 'Uckfield'.

There are so many different accents in the United Kingdom (and even just in England alone) that words like 'cook' and 'uck' are pronounced differently from one place to the next, and in some native accents both 'cook' and 'uck' are pronounced identically, so a better way of talking about the pronunciation of the place-name 'Cookfield' was needed.

Therefore I've made a slight alteration, building on what was previously there but deleting the part that was well intentioned but misleading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.30.159.193 (talk) 17:00, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
