There was a redirect to Category:Crops, which confused cross language references, so I removed it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mlewan (talkcontribs) 08:49, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Definition

[edit]

This article began thus:

A crop is any plant that is grown in significant quantities to be harvested as food, as livestock fodder, or for any other economic purpose.

I changed it to this:

A crop is the annual or season's yield of any plant that is grown in significant quantities to be harvested as food, as livestock fodder, or for any other economic purpose.

That first definition is not consistent with such things as a reference to "this year's crop of apples". Michael Hardy (talk) 16:53, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a farmer but I'd say both were correct. What about the phrase "I'm going to plant some crops"? Mattwinner (talk) 15:09, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Plants?

[edit]

Is the use of the term crop really restricted only to plants? If so, what do you call an annual or season's yield of mushrooms or other non-plants? Balfa (talk) 14:01, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rewriting

[edit]

I rewrote the article to temporarily provide basic information and links until a properly referenced article can be written. I caution to try to avoid too much overlap with the agriculture article. Although, glancing at that article, I do not think it will be much of a problem at this point. Also, the "see also" section should probably either be pared down or made into two or more columns so that it does not take up so much space. I would make the columns myself, but I do not know how, or if it is even possible. The Wikipedia help article on columns is for regular text, not lists.

I strongly suggest that the article not be changed back to the annual or season's yield definition. While the term is definitely used that way, I argue that it is not the most common usage, and that the meaning could never be much more than a dictionary definition, so it would not require an article, anyway. In other words, there is no need for an article named "crop (yield)". -- Kjkolb (talk) 02:37, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is a proposal to merge Agriculture classification of crops into this one. Please see Talk:Agriculture_classification_of_crops#Merge. --Animalparty-- (talk) 06:48, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reference or include Indicative Crop Classification Version 1.0 (ICC)

The World Programme for the Census of Agriculture provide a book http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/statmanuals/files/ICC_1_0_EN_FR.pdf

Might be included or not... --Marc Sibert (talk) 09:47, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Difference between "pulses" and "groundnuts"?

[edit]

I was not familiar with either term so I used the links. Both refer to the seed of a legume. Is "pulse" an above ground seed and "groundnut" below ground?User-duck (talk) 23:08, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
