Playing Style Section
Is there anyway we can add a playing style section to Cristiano's official wikipedia. We can talk about how Ronaldo is a new breed of Winger. Wingers were usually short players with good technical abilities that would usually just cross the ball in to box for forwards to head in. Cristiano has evolved into a new breed of winger. Tall and muscualr and built like a striker, who makes runs into the box. We can also about his flamboyent style of play with array of tricks (stepovers and other dribbling). I think a section like this would be really helpful on people just getting into football. It can also explain why he's adore by many fans and hated just as much by other fans. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.125.105.199 (talk • contribs) 17:05, 29 July 2007
- I've added this section a few days ago. Feel free to update/improve on it. Lpy4606 04:02, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- Not that I disagree with any of the comments in the "Playing Style" section, but would anyone think me foolish to question the objectivity of the writing? Certainly nothing that was said was much of a stretching of the truth, but accurate or not, I think some of the lines are favorably biased. For example, this statement: "His unique playing style is a far cry from traditional wingers of the past and he can best be described as a winger and a striker rolled into one." I'm new to Wikipedia editing so I won't take it upon myself to NPOV tag it until we've discussed it a bit. BostonFenian (talk) 07:32, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
"He is also a diver"
Surely a citation is needed for a comment like this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jhfl2 (talk • contribs) 22:46, 3 January 2008 (UTC) This should not even be taken into consideration. This is an encyclopedia article (every comment must be supported by a valid, respectable source) not someone opinion on one's character (this is not a gossip sports page).
- He is a diver, he gets called for diving all the time. He called called for diving against Liverpool and got up with smile. Why is that so hard to understand? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.90.59.54 (talk) 17:46, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- It's not a matter of understanding - it's whether the assertion is verifiable and backed by a reliable source. --Mosmof (talk) 04:00, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- A better Statement would be that he has been accused of being a diver.--Actionfury199 (talk) 09:31, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
There is plenty of "reliable sources" and accounts of him diving. In a match against Tottenham Hotspur he dived a total of seven times - a world record practically. Yes, it should be mentioned that he is probably footballs biggest diver. Regardless of what team you support, it's very clear that he is, and always will be, a diver. ````FearSneachta (talk • contribs) 12:53, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Second striker/midfielder?
i have never seen a game in which he is a second striker, and never a central midfielder. He has always been on the right or left wing. I checked the source for that statement and it is nowhere in that article. Please revise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.181.162.36 (talk) 06:42, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- You can't have watched that many games to be honest then, because I've seen a fare few where hes been pushed up front as a support striker. Benjdr (talk) 20:30, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
actually, i have. his role as a winger is to make runs down the wing and make crosses up front to set up the strikers. because he is up front so often and has an eye for goal himself, it may appear as though he is a second striker... but he isn't. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.181.162.36 (talk) 08:26, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- Don't patronize me. I know exactly what his playing style is and he often finds him self "up front". This is, however, totally different to playing as a support striker, which i assure you he has. Benjdr (talk) 19:17, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Not to get caught up in this little domestic but I prefer to look at Ronaldo as more of an attacking midfielder than anything else. Yes he does start almost evry game on the wing but if you watch the game he usually drifts into more of a centre roleand runs at the defenders!
please write back if you disagree id like to discuss this futher! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ildlacr (talk • contribs) 14:06, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
- Instead of debating about it and trying to dissect his playing style, which would amount to original research and against Wikipedia policy, we could just find a reliable source that defines a position and save everyone's time. --Mosmof (talk) 14:52, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
He's a striker, that's all he is. Rooney tracks back and plays as a support striker, Tevez tracks back, and Ronaldo stays up front. In the game against Roma he was up front the entire match on his own.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.90.59.54 (talk • contribs)
- Mancheter United say he's a winger [1], and I'm more inclined to believe them than an anon on Wikipedia. Darkson (BOOM! An interception!) 17:58, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
Watch a game and you'll know what I'm talking about. And nice wikiburn, I'm an anon so I must not have a vested interest in WP, or even know what I'm talking about. At least I use proper English, unlike some users. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.90.59.54 (talk) 22:09, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
He interchanges positions during the game with his colleagues, often he find himself in the position of a striker regardless of his starting position. That is the nature of United's fluency up front. However, this could be said of many wingers, it is part of the game that they will come into the box or move into a more central position occaisionally. There have been a few occasions, nonetheless, where he has started as a centre-forward. Nonetheless, he drifts out wide in these games too. He never plays rigidly in one position, and that's part of his appeal. So on this wikipedia page, I think it would be an oversimplification to simply list him as a winger. Number of International goals
Shouldn't there be 21 international goals credited to Ronaldo as he scored during the World Cup 08 Portugal/England penalty shootout? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.82.176.31 (talk) 11:57, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- Goals scored in shootouts don't count towards the total. Keep in mind that England vs Portugal match is recorded as a 0-0 draw after extra time. --Mosmof (talk) 14:14, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
can someone update please
the opening paragraph says he's a winger for United. can someone please update the wikilink on United, so that it actually goes to man utd's page and not to a disambiguation page... i can't as it's locked and i don't sign in at work, due to it being a shared ip (and i'm not getting credit for other idiots vandalism thru said ip). 194.221.133.226 (talk) 15:09, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- Fixed. There's some serious overlinking in this article - I de-linked Ronaldo, which went to the Brazilian striker's article, and the phrase "burn-out" in an article title. Sheesh. --Mosmof (talk) 18:19, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
Can someone also change his appearances and goals for Man Utd? His appearances are : 238 And his goals are : 91. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.73.60.107 (talk) 03:12, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Sporting Clube de Portugal
In the section "Sporting Clube de Portugal" there is a big mistake when it's said that "Ronaldo joined Sporting's other youth players who trained at the Alcochete, the club's "football factory,"...". The Sporting's Alcochete Academy was only built in 2002 and by that time he was already part of the first squad. When Ronaldo went to Sporting he was living in Sportings youth house, that was in the "Estádio de Alvalade" facilities. As a curiosity, by that time he was known for the support he gave to younger players, even in their studies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.245.185.38 (talk) 13:42, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Syntax
the syntax of the first paragraph really sucks. I would edit it if it werent locked. it needs a rewrite, in my opinion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.138.83.15 (talk) 06:51, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- I've grammatically tweaked the opening paragraph. I know it looks shorter, but I've left all the key points intact. BostonFenian (talk) 19:10, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
one of the best =
shouldn't the lead also mention that he is widely considered one of the best in the world? and that he is closing in on george best's record of goals in a season for a non striker (32 i believe)? 81.96.160.6 (talk) 05:31, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
- The answer to your first question is a definite "maybe". While the "widely considered" descriptor absolves the statement of complete bias, it's still a reasonably subjective remark. I don't really think the statement would add anything to the article anyway. As for your second question, nothing about that should be mentioned until he either ties or breaks the record. BostonFenian (talk) 18:33, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- I would cosign BostonFenian's comment, except to add that the phrase "widely considered" is a classic example of weasel words, and should not be in a Wikipedia article. As for the record, it's a rather arbitrary honor and not one that's particularly notable. As always, WP:N applies - if it's important enough that someone brings it up, then great. Otherwise, it's original research. --Mosmof (talk) 04:42, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
2nd goal against Bolton
The second goal against Bolton is a very important goal for Ronaldo. Not only because he beat the maximum of goals scored by George Best in one season (33 vs 32), but also because he now has more goals scored in his career in ManUnited than Eric Cantona (83 vs 82). One night, 2 records... :-) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Real12345 (talk • contribs)

Rape allegations?
Why is there nothing about his alleged rape of a prostitute? Even though it was not put before a court and he claimed the sex was consensual, it had an influence on him mentally in his early years at United and proved a distraction to him. It is surely notable. Malick78 (talk) 10:44, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, and then there's the bullfight ad. Maybe a proper controversy section is due? Malick78 (talk) 10:45, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
The alleged rape case did not even go to court, there was insufficient evidence to prosecute (Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/4469832.stm). And no one knows if this event influenced him mentally or if it became a distraction (as you claim). We are entering here in the realm of pure speculation, which should not be part of a Wikipedia article. I also fail to see the importance of the bullfight ad "controversy", it doesn’t add value to this article either. In fact I very much appreciated that the controversy portion of this article was illuminated all together, at one point. These type of things do not add value, and are just conjectures and gossip. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.62.252.153 (talk) 20:56, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, there are pictures of him with prostitutes, and there is another story that came out two days ago about an orgy. So I'm starting to see a pattern. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.90.59.54 (talk) 17:57, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
There aren’t any pictures of him with prostitutes. If there is (which I very much doubt), than write here the reference, else what you are saying is nothing more than gossip. Your claim of another story is also unfounded (though I follow CR news’s closely I haven't catch not even a hint of another story that come out 2 days ago). Plus what is the importance of what one does in their private life to Wikipedia??? Who is updating the page?
A couple of days I tried to add to his Manchester United section about him getting his first goal against Liverpool (Very important because the doubters were saying he doesn't score against the big boys!). I also tried to add in that he scored that sublime goal against Villa and laid on 3 more. I then tried to edit that he notched his seventh goal in the CL (again important as press in Italy were knocking him because he couldn't do it in Milan last year and that he wouldn't cope with the pressure cooker atmosphere of the Roma crowd!) —Preceding unsigned comment added by FearSneachta (talk • contribs) 12:53, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Real Madrid speculation
Lest I get myself in an edit war, here's why I deleted the Real Madrid speculation:
- "Recent news" or "recently" should not be used in a Wikipedia article - it's an encyclopedia, not Wikinews, and edits need to stand the test of time as long as the facts remain the same.
- Real Madrid directors and directorship candidates do this every year -they'll talk about bringing whoever is the hottest player in, and it's all a ploy to get votes in the director election. I can't remember the last time Ronaldo wasn't linked to Real, in fact. That Arroyo publicly announced his desire to bring in Ronaldo isn't newsworthy, and it's definitely not Wikipedia-worthy.
- indeed money may mean more to him than loyal fans? Seriously? Wikipedia is not a crystal ball and it is certainly not a mind reader. Plus, you're violating those pesky pillars, verifiability and neutral point of view. Mosmof (talk) 01:22, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- Page currently has him as a Real Madrid player since 2003. I'll be glad to see him out of the PL, but this should be fixed until he actually signs whatever outrageous contract Calderon is prepared to put in front of him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.177.55.15 (talk) 16:10, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
Penalty miss
"...despite missing an, at the time, crucial penalty in the 1st leg of the 2008 Champions League Semi-Final..." - I really don't see the point of that line, that was only the 2nd penalty he'd missed all season. Why don't we go to every penalty takers page and say "<Player> is the first choice penalty taker for <Club> despite missing on <somedate> against <someteam>" Andy86 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.195.84.231 (talk) 23:13, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
- I looked at that whole paragraph and ended up removing it, since, besides the issue you brought up, it was a mess of POV statements that were only superficially supported by linked sources. And you're right - it's stupid to cherry pick moments like that. --Mosmof (talk) 00:47, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, an encyclopaedia article should look at the wider picture. LiamUK (talk) 13:22, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Scored vs all teams but 2 in the EPL 07/08
In the EPL, the only teams ronaldo failed to score against were chelsea and man city (whom he missed the home match against due to suspension). He scored against Chelsea in the UCL. I believe that the only player to have scored against all teams in 1 season is alan shearer, possibly in the old 42 game season. I think that ronaldo is the 2nd best in this category of teams scored against in 1 season. A note of this should be made in the special achievements section as it is a unique and interesting fact (one raised to me by TV commentators a couple of months ago). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Utopial (talk • contribs) 02:06, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
penalty record
ive realised that a very important aspect that wikipedia fails to have is penalty records. id love to see a feature for the major penalty taking players that has their penalty taking record, split by club, country, possibly year. ronaldo has missed 1 for portugal, 2 in the EPL (altho he converted the rebound of one) and 2 in the UCL —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.209.221.113 (talk) 05:14, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
World Cup 2006
Is there any basis for saying the French booed Ronaldo? I'm far more inclined to believe that it was English fans who had bought tickets for the semi-final. I doubt very much that the French fans care about England's exit from international tournaments. Though it wouldn't surprise me if the English fans thought they did. --86.141.110.123 (talk) 20:33, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
- Actually I believe it was large parts of the German crowd which booed Ronaldo for general unsportsmanlike behaviour during the tournament. The booing continued during the for third place against Germany, where it is unlikely that a lot of English or French supporters were present. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.47.45.108 (talk) 13:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Criticism
Every game Ronaldo plays is subject to criticism and although he receives large amounts of praise, some of the criticism he receives can be both harsh and at the same time valid, therefore it should have its own section aside from the praise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MascaraSnake1984 (talk • contribs) 17:33, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- The problem is that criticism sections are inherently not WP:NPOV, as explained here. Just as with praise and accomplishment, the criticism can be placed in proper context. And it's misleading to suggest that honors have equal value to criticism. Awards and other accomplishments aren't opinion - they are undeniable facts. As far as this article is concerned, the "World Cup incident" section is plenty negative, and surely if you thought other sections weren't balanced enough, you could incorporate the criticism in other sections as well. --Mosmof (talk) 01:47, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Well pundits criticism would not really fit with the world cup section as this relates to the EPL. Ronaldo was voted writers player of the year, surely if we can write about him receiving recognition from the writers then we can also see the other side of the coin, especially as sportmanship is a large part of the game and has been in the headlines alot lately altough not always targeted at Ronaldo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MascaraSnake1984 (talk • contribs) 09:51, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
- Criticism against Ronaldo is not "the other side of the coin" to him being voted to a recognized award, an actual achievement and a recognized honour. And Eamonn Dunphy is a horrible, horrible example - he's a shock jock, and his livelihood is based on hyperbole and being controversial, so he could hardly be considered a reliable, expert voice. Again, criticism can be included (and it is, in this very article!), but it has to be in context, and it has to be from a source that's more reliable than a shock jock or tabloids. --Mosmof (talk) 04:20, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Unless the criticism is from a highly notable source, then it should not be included - otherwise every single football player will have a criticism section with unimportant comments from unimportant people. For example, if Alex Ferguson goes on record and says that he sucks, it is notable, if a FIFA representative says something it is notable, if a tabloid quality pundit comments, it is not notable.Sennen goroshi (talk) 03:41, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
This article is extremely one sided. There is only mention of positive aspects of his career. Why is there no criticism in the article itself? He is the biggest diver currently playing the game. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.145.176.23 (talk) 17:26, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Ridiculously one sided article about him. People want to write all this nonsense about him being widely regarded as the best player in the world etc. etc. etc. Yet no mention of his constant choking in big games, his constant diving and cheating. Comment above about how something from a tabloid is not notable if its criticism, yet if its praise it gets mentioned. Ridiculous. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hendrixx13 (talk • contribs) 19:02, 19 June 2008 (UTC)
What about his personal life?
Pretty much all major premiership footballers, particularly sports personalities with such high profiles, have a section on personal life, relationships, etc etc. I know Cristiano Ronaldo tends to keep himself to himself a lot more than his peers do, there are still plenty of personal details out there, such as his relationship with Nuria Bermúdez and Merche Romero, among others. I was wondering whether or not a section needs to be made? Tris2000 (talk) 11:46, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Family
Something needs to be mentioned about Ronaldos immediate family. It would be ideal to discuss the close relationship he has with cousin Stephen Weston from Oldham, a small town north of Manchester. Weston is related to Ronaldo by direct bloodline on their mothers side. Leilana (Nee Aviero)is the sister of Ronadlo's mother Irena and the mother of english born Stephen Weston (20). Westons father is a delivery driver based in Greater Manchester. Being of mixed origin (Anglo-Portugesse) Weston holds a close, almost brotherly bond with Ronaldo. Though having lived most of their lives apart, the cousins have always been close, with Ronaldo actually visiting England many times previous to his transfer to Manchester United. It is said that this was one of the contributing factors to his move to Manchester and the main reason he came to England in the first place. Ronaldo took the oportunity to re-unite his mother with her sister whom were also very close, and his brothers and sisters with their cousins living in Oldham and Rochdale respectively. Ronaldo does not deny this and has often made reference to Weston in Portugesse interviews and in goal celebrations. Ronaldo can be seen gesturing as if his cheeks were full of air when he scores, giving a rather arrogant facial expression, however this is a joke played between Weston and Ronaldo that dates back to early teen years, when the two would use the facial expression to secretly show the other that a passing girl or woman had taken their fancy. Ronaldo dedicates much of his talent to his late Father, however he also says Weston played and still does an important part in his career. Ronaldo has been quoted as saying "If it was not for him (Weston) I would not be the player I am today". Ronaldo also uses the "Multiple Step-Over" technique that Weston taught him back in Madeira as a reference to their up-bringing which Ronaldo described as "Tricky".
