Redirect target
[edit]Two editors have tried re-targeting this redirect to Crete (disambiguation) rather than to plain Crete. I don't think this works, for several reasons:
- The "Cretan" redirect has multiple article links pointing to it, all of which should be taken to the island of Crete. If retargeted to the dab page, all the links would have to be disambiguated.
- The island of Crete is just as much the WP:PRIMARYMEANING of the ajective "Cretan" as it is the primary meaning of the noun "Crete" – if not even more so (since e.g. the US locations called "Crete" would be less likely to be referred to through such an adjective).

- I decided it wasn't a good idea as well. I just finished updating and cleaning up Crete (disambiguation) and I'm about to turn this page into a dab with the adjective as the main entry so just bear with me. Pariah24 (talk) 19:46, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hmm, you mean turning Cretan into a separate dab page? I'm not sure I'd agree with that either. Both the arguments above would still speak against that just as much as against the redirect to the other dab page, wouldn't they? Fut.Perf. ☼ 19:50, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- There I'm gonna have to disagree with you, there are way too many articles with Cretan in the title to not cover them, not to mention there are already some "sub" dab pages (Cretan Revolt, Cretan War) so it just makes sense to have one here. But you're welcome to edit it as you see fit. Pariah24 (talk) 20:10, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- If the dab page stays, I have no problem disambiguating the links that point there. If not that's fine. Pariah24 (talk) 20:19, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- But per WP:DAB#Partial title matches, the entries you just put in, like "Cretan school" or "Cretan hieroglyphs", shouldn't even be contained in the dab page in the first place, let alone count as contenders for "primary topic" status. After all, they don't represent separate meanings of "Cretan", but merely contain that adjective in exactly its primary meaning, referring to the island. There isn't really any legitimate entry in the dab page as you just wrote it [1] right now, except for the primary one. (Except maybe for the "The Cretan" entries, if they were a thing, but I don't really think they are, and that sub-dab-page The Cretan should really be scrapped too.) - @Future Perfect at Sunrise: Yeah, I wasn't aware of that particular nuance of the dab policy, and I realize now I was kinda trying to create a search index. Although there's really no justification given at all in the policy as to why this is a bad thing. If the purpose is disambiguation, and set index articles are allowed to exist, I don't see the point of limiting the inclusion of articles so much. Seems rather self-defeating to me, if the goal is finding the correct article for a specific subject. Pariah24 (talk) 18:57, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
