Nobody has really been able to give me a good, impartial explanation of the differences between the MLPC and the CPC. The wikipedia articles start out saying that the CPC is soviet and the MLPC is Beijing aligned and more dogmatic. But then the article continues to sound as if its trying to talk itself out of this assessment (well, but then they liked Albania, and North Korea, and gee now they're their own models and less dogmatic. But they still don't like the CPC.) I tried to email both parties and get them to explain but while the CPC wrote me back something to the effect of what i have wrtitten above, the MLPC ignored me--twice! Please help. And maybe someone could take a look at the quality of this article. in grade 9 english we we were warned against talking ourselves out of our positions mid-essay. (I realise that we are NPOV here but if we are going to say that one party takes a less dynamic view then we should not contradict ourselves the next paragraph down.) I ask those who agree with me and those who don't to register their opinions here as well. Carolynparrishfan 00:39, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian Party for Renewal

[edit]

Does anyone know the exact relationship between the CPC-ML and the Canadian Party for Renewal?

This is what I currently know:

In 1993, a group associated with the CPC-ML attempted to register a separate political party called the Canadian Party for Renewal. (I can remember this because of a brief meeting with Elaine Couto, a perennial CPC-ML candidate, who tried to sell me on the new party in late March '93 -- I was having supper at McMaster University at the time, she was walking from table to table handing out cards.)

The party was unable to field 50 candidates, and did not formally contest the 1993 federal election. A number of CPR candidates ran as independents, however.

I initially thought that the CPR was simply the CPC-ML under a different name ... but I've discovered that the CPC-ML also ran official candidates in 1993. This would seem to imply that they were separate parties ... except that several CPR candidates from 1993 ran for the CPC-ML in 1997, 2000 and 2004.

There was also an "Ontario Renewal Party", led by Diane Johnston in 1995. Johnston is a perennial CPC-ML candidate, who also ran as an official M-L candidate in the 1993 federal election.

In 2003, the CPC-ML endorsed ten "Independent Renewal" candidates in Ontario's provincial election. They also appear to have endorsed "Renewal" candidates in 1999.

This leaves me with two "educated guesses" on the relationship between the parties:

(i) The CPR was a temporary breakaway group from the CPC-ML, and its members rejoined the CPC-ML later in the 1990s.

(ii) The CPR was actually the CPC-ML under a different name, as the party was attempting to broaden its support base with a "parallel organization".

Does anyone know the answer? CJCurrie 04:17, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Update: I've now discovered that the CPC-ML wasn't re-registered with Elections Canada until *late* 1993, by which time the CPR had already been floated (and, seemingly, rejected).

Perhaps (a third option) the CPR was planned as a front organization for the CPC-ML, and the idea wasn't rejected until some CPC-ML candidates were already registered with Elections Canada as representatives of the new party.

Penetrating the mind of Hardial Bains is quite difficult ... CJCurrie 04:50, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The CPC-ML's 40th anniversary party is in April (1st I think). Perhaps you should try to go;)AndyL 13:41, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

  • It'd almost be worth it, just for the historical memorabilia to be had (I wonder if they handle requests for "Albanian retro"). On the other hand, I'd be concerned that Ms. Elaine Couto (see above) would remember me enquiring as to how many training sessions she'd been forced to attend, in order to memorize her extremely pedantic lines on "democratic renewal" and "government of the people".

(She really didn't seem happy with me, if memory serves ...) CJCurrie 16:54, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Talking shit on the net behind people's back is so self gratifing, isn't it? --Mista-X 07:12, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It was an obscure-reference joke. I didn't actually say that to Couto.

Anyway, do you know the full story of the CPR/CPC-ML situtation? CJCurrie 20:45, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Still, you are using someone's real name and being very agitational. It's not like she's some high profile politician, this is just an normal everyday persyn that you are slandering. I really don't find it humerous, considering I know her persynally. But, whatever gets your jolly rocks off. --Mista-X 16:46, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'll explain:

(i) The "Albanian retro" line was taken from a reference to the CPC-ML in a Toronto independent journal a few years ago (I can't remember which one).

(ii) I met Elaine Couto at McMaster University in 1993, and she gave me a CPR card (as mentioned above). I listened to her give a brief presentation on the CPR, nodded politely, and said I'd think about it (I didn't realize it was connected to the CPC-ML at the time). As this happened, someone else came to my table and started berating her for no apparent reason.

I've told this story a few times, and I thought mentioning the situation here might be amusing to one or two people. The entire paragraph was meant as a tongue-in-cheek joke, though I can see how referencing a non-prominent figure could be taken otherwise.

If you want to blank this section (from "It'd almost be worth it" to the end of this sentence), I won't object. CJCurrie 17:14, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Getting back to the CPR/CPC-ML situation:

I now believe that the CPR was intended to be the official vehicle for the CPC-ML in the 1993 election, and that a number of candidates were nominated with this expectation. The plan seems to have been abandoned when the Communist Party of Canada (CPC) was officially de-registered with Elections Canada late in the year, leaving the "Communist" name available for another group.

Can anyone confirm/deny this? CJCurrie 17:26, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I can't confirm or deny, but I do not find the "Communist party name being available" theory to be likely. I expect that Elections Canada would not register a different party under the name of a recently de-registered party on the basis that it could confuse voters. A not-very-good analgy but the only one of which I can think is EC's refusal to register a new "Progressive Conservative Party" following the demise of the old one. A result, the new group became the Progressive Canadian Party. I recognize that the argument for possible confusion is stronger in the PC case because of the existence of another Conservative Party, but I think that the principle would still apply: CPC voters could think that a Hardial Bains CPC is the same as the old one, and vote for it by mistake. (Not that it would really matter one whit, but you know....) Furthermore, given the possibility of the old CPC re-registering, I think that EC would keep thename available to the old group for at least a while. Ground Zero 17:35, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't mean that the CPC-ML would attempt to register itself as the CPC -- I meant that they'd try to establish the word "Communist" as part of their official name. During the 1970s, the CPC-ML was forced to register with Elections Canada as the "M-L Party" to avoid confusion with the CPC; with the CPC de-registered, they might have hoped to get around the problem.

On the other hand, I see that the CPC-ML has been registered as the "Marxist-Leninist Party" with elections Canada since 1993. Perhaps they hoped the CPC wouldn't re-register, and that the "CPC-ML" name would eventually become available for them.

(Still groping in the dark ...) CJCurrie 18:02, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ah. That makes more sense. But not enough that I think that specualtion should go in the article. I think it would be just as likely that the "Renewal" name was being tested to see if a broader coalition could be formed (with the CPCML at the head, of course). Why they didn't continue with it? I can only guess that the Renewal name created only confusion (a) because it was new, and (b) because the Reform Party was becoming well-known, and the M-Lers would not want to have been conufused with that. Hardial Bains' CPC membership

[edit]

The story behind this is sketchy. CPC Claims Bains' was 'rejected' for membership to their party in Vancouver; yet they also claim to have his membership card to proove it. It seems funny that one rejected for membership would have a card made in the first place. I believe CPC-ML has said that he struggled against revisionism in Canada and decided to found a Communist Party since there was no real one in Canada at the time. Perhaps Bains' was a member and either quit or was kicked out (or both). In any case I'm changing the entry unless someone can show proof that he was rejected for membership.

I don't know why I forgot to sign the above... --Mista-X 16:47, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well just to inform ya, there is application cards that the party has that you submit to be approved at the club level for the CPC Comrade Stalin 11:16, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tommy Douglas: martial arts master

[edit]

The story about Douglas "disarming" a CPC-ML member is hearsay at best; and in any case rallies are filled with hundreds of people. If this story really happened there is no confirmation it was actually a party member or just a random person at the rally, or even a undercover cop for that matter! Therefor I will remove that paragraph if it is re added unless actual proof can be provided. --Mista-X (talk) 13:17, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mass deletions?

[edit]

I made a lot of edits to this article and no doubt spelling and grammer and wikipedia style was in need of improvement -- but then a user completely deleted all the work I had done. If there are problems with this article, lets talk! The edits were described as *cough cough* obsessive, not meeting Wikipedia standards, or scholarly standards, and being questionable in motive. To get the discussion going, I just want to say that everything was sourced and that it is very difficult to find sources about the CPC-ML that (a) were written by that party or a supporter or (b) were written by groups hostile to the CPC-ML. Nevertheless the CPC-ML has a very dynamic and colourful history which is quite different from the CPC and deserves to be told. --JB1917 (talk) 04:06, 7 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bains' death and legacy

[edit]

I would like to clean up this section, particularly on the CPC-ML's status as a cult / Bain's legacy. It seems to me that it relies too much on anecdotes without much hard facts -- both in the positive (he's remembered in India) and in the negative (one person's terrible experience with the party). For a single wikipedia page, I think this should be shorter and more focused. Dsakey1978 (talk) 14:57, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Should this be renamed the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada?

[edit]

I'm just asking because that's what they are registered as, what they are known as, and the current title might cause some confusion with the other Communist party. Or am I missing something here? LunaTheMoon2 (talk) 03:42, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Possible confusion is not a sufficient reason to move the article. If distinguishing parentheses weren't enough, none of these articles would exist with their current names. Yue🌙 04:07, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, it wasn't just the confusion. I meant, like, they're registered with Elections Canada as the Marxist-Leninist Party, and while they refer to themselves as both on their website, the first header you see says "Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada", so I feel like that title might be more fitting as MLPC seems to be the dominant name of theirs (and yes, I am aware that the url is cpcml.com, I'm not denying the CPC-ML branding I'm just pointing out that MLPC seems to be the more dominant name). I am appeling to you as a senators and requesting to you protect the people of Europe from the families you have deported because they did not wanted to work there and get money from the social Germany to pay their Credits to your universieties and they were so uneducated that someone had to talk for them to buy a machine for Jewellery from a village in Germany as an example. It seemed they emmigrated there for having children and got money from the islamic millitary and a degree in Cosmetics. Now they are in Europe and they seem they do not even talk in English. Did you ask what they were doing there? Now they are here and they want to get money from the social system in Europe make children again and they get money again from the islamic millitary again this time for their family. Do people in your universities do not speak in Egnlish? They all behave like they are a tribe form Iran and have attacked our homes with what ever they could and steal whatever they could with jihadis from Syria, who work for Bashar Assad. They just hid their canadian passport this time. When they got there they hid their iranian passports.

What is this?Who is responsible for jewellery industry for islamic mullas in your country in Canada? What the f**ck is this?
