The Act for NSW self-government which included the NSW parliament with Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council was enacted in the British Parliament on 16 July 1855. The New South Wales Parliament opened and sat for the first time on 22 May 1856. The first Premier and Colonial Sectretary, Sir Stuart Alexander Donaldson was appointed by the Governor on 6 June 1856. When was the NSW self-government Act proclaimed? Is it known why the colony was called "New South Wales" rather than just "New Wales"? As far as I know (but I am no expert on Wales), the distinction between South Wales and North Wales is not all that significant. People from Wales, for instance, generally just say they are from Wales. Why was "South" specified?Bill (talk) 00:25, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
