Legal?
[edit]I'm not sure about the "entirely legal" assertion in the current text: offering unpriced drinks, particularly if they purport to be alcoholic, may well be against the licensing and fair trading laws, selling non-alcoholic drinks whilst creating the impression that they are alcoholic is misrepresentation, and demanding money with menaces is definitely illegal. I've heard that the drink prices are often displayed somewhere, but in an environment with such low lighting that they are unreadable.-- The Anome 23:51, 22 April 2006 (UTC)
Potential link
[edit]The following link was added by one user, then removed by another. This did, however, seem to me to shed some light on the subject of the prohibition: http://www.legendsofamerica.com/ah-prohibitionspeakeasy.html Would someone mind clarifying why this would be removed? Etymology of 'clip'
[edit]So where does the word come from? Is it in current usage or is it archaic? I met a 50 year old ex-Soho hostess who claimed never to have heard the term. 89.168.94.202 (talk) 12:30, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
Cultural references
[edit]Would the opening lines of the Kinks' song "Lola" be a reference to a clip joint? "I met her in a club down in old Soho, where they drink champagne, and it tastes just like Coca-Cola" This is implying that despite it being called "champagne," the narrator claims it to taste like Coca-Cola, or even that it is Coca-Cola. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jefe619 (talk • contribs) 02:30, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
