Per the clan motto, Buaidh No Bas, the article has it listed as "To conquer or die", but I have always heard it as "Victory or Death", does anyone have a proper answer?Rob McDougall 04:55, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
It appears my edit to the clan motto has been switched back to "To Conquer or Die". The wikipedia entry for Clan MacNeil, who also share "Buaidh No Bas" as their motto, has it listed as "Victory or Death", http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Clan_MacNeil Rob McDougall 22:15, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
As with most translations, there probably just isn't a perfect english translation of Buaidh no Bas. I've heard both Conquer or Die and Victory or Death my whole life, and they basically mean the same thing, so I think both are acceptable translations of the phrase. -Sean McDougal 11:15 4 August 2006 (PDT)
According to the English-Gaelic dictionary at the University of Maryland, Buaidh means Conquer and Bas means Die. However, I think both are used interchangeably. TheCommodore7 14:24, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
- The confusion may lie in that Buaidh No Bas translates as "victory or death", while Vincere Vel Mori (the motto for the MacDowall sept of Clan MacDougall) translates as "to conquer or die." MacDougalls probably would only use Buaidh No Bas, while MacDowalls often use both interchangably due to our historical descent from and allegiance to Clan MacDougall. Septs
[edit]- I have removed McEachern as a Sept of Clan MacDougall. This entry is entirely erroneous. The MacEachern's have never been a Sept of Clan MacDougall.Amceache (talk) 21:59, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Well-written but incomplete. 2 things are immediately apparent as lacking- references and the history of the clan in the 20th and 21st Centuries. Lurker (said · done) 13:32, 23 October 2007 (UTC) |
