Error in Bapsfontein language usage figures

[edit]

I am not a south african local. However, from the article here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Bapsfontein It seems that in the table shown in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality article which specifies the language usage, the figures for Bapsfontein are wrong.--46.27.37.249 (talk) 15:22, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's because the infobox data is for the 2011 census whereas the Ekurhuleni Metro data in the table are from 2001. Bezuidenhout (talk) 18:19, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Even so, the differences seem too high:

First languages (2011)[1]

• Afrikaans 43.7%
• English 17.4%
• Zulu 10.9%
• Northern Sotho 6.1%
• Other 21.9%

Compared to: Bapsfontein (2001) 77302 0.31 936 Zulu 34% Pedi 17% Sotho 13% --46.27.37.249 (talk) 15:40, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's because the boundaries of Bapsfontein changed. In 2001 it looked like this and in 2011 they expanded it so include some largely white inhabited places so it looked like this Bezuidenhout (talk) 19:10, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinate error

You haven't said what you think is wrong with the coordinates. I've adjusted them to indicate a point nearer the center of the metropolitan municipality, but if you still think that there is an error, you'll need to provide a clear explanation of what it is. You haven't said what is wrong with the coordinates in the article, and they appear to be correct. If you still think that there is an error, you'll need to provide a clear explanation of what it is. Deor (talk) 18:33, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

3 townships renamed in early 2020 - or were they?

[edit]

See

  • Mbuli, Mbekezeli. "Tembisa to get missing 'h' back after years of misspelling". The Citizen. Retrieved 2020-09-04.

As of February 12 or thereabouts, Tembisa was renamed Thembisa, Tokoza was renamed Thokoza, and Tsakane was renamed Tsakani.

However, even the official web site uses a mix of both Thembisa and the older Tembisa in its publications dated after Feb. 12, 2020, for example, this city publication from July refers to Temblisa. This needs attention from a local expert. Articles about the affected townships may need to be updated.

The question for Wikipedia is: Which names do people in the city or the local government use most often today? In short, did the renaming announced in February actually "stick" or are people and officials reverting back to the older spellings? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 00:47, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It seems clear that they were officially renamed. Unlike other renamings in the country, these ones are uncontroversial as they're simply correcting an old misspelling. It will take time for everything to be updated, so as of now usage is still inconsistent. Greenman (talk) 23:00, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In fact the people living in this township have been using the correct spelling "Thembisa" all along but because of historical legacy of apartheid which was responsible for writing the names that's why most names were misspelled. Thembisa in Zulu means promise and it's always spelled with an "h", I know this because I speak the language and know people from that Township. I've also put this list under my watchlist so that as soon as the official renaming happens I change them accordingly as well. Bobbyshabangu talk 06:42, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Greenman and Bobbyshabangu: Thanks. Note that the last of the three, Tsakane/Tsakani, is still at the former name in the English Wikipedia. Also, the other-language Wikipedias still have articles under the name Tembisa. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 14:53, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Change Name To Ekurhuleni

[edit]

If Wikipedia's policy is to match article names to common usage, then I doubt this article is named accordingly. I propose that this article be renamed to Ekurhuleni. I am not too familiar as to how the process goes, but I hope to at least get the conversation started.

Thanks for listening! 2600:1700:8930:9710:2060:52AB:AAF:7058 (talk) 19:57, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
