Talk:Christmas tree (oil well)

I suggest a name change for this topic. First off, "oil" is a politically incorrect term, "petroleum" would be a better choice. Second, this article applies to Petroleum and Natural Gas. Something like "Christmas tree (Petroleum and Natural Gas)" or Christmas tree (natural resource extraction) would less specific and still be proper description.

Since when was oil a politically incorrect term? Not particularly specific, perhaps, but certainly PC. In any case, I believe the article should be merged with "Well head" since they appear to describe more or less the same thing. TastyCakes (talk) 15:34, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree The wellhead and Christmas tree are very different elements in a well system. They maybe supplied by different manufacturers, and the christmas tree may not be present if the well is an exploration well without production. Keep them seperate. The present Christmas Tree description is not precise, as it doesn't say where in the drill line / production line the tree is fitted, especially versus BOP (blow-out preventer), LMRP (lower marine riser package, on top of BOP) and diverter.

Picture for top

[edit]

We should put a picture at the top right from the gallery at the bottom of the article, but I don't know which would be best. Does anyone have a preference? RJFJR (talk) 15:36, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. I vote for the third one - the shiny green dual-completion wellhead. (andyminicooper (talk) 17:22, 3 May 2010 (UTC))[reply]

I added the 3rd, the caption could be improved. RJFJR (talk) 18:50, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be better (i.e., clearer to a non-industry person navigating to this page) to show a SINGLE completion tree -- ideally a "large" one with two master valves, dual wing valves on both sides, and a swabbing valve with pressure gauge on top. And have a non-cluttered background so the components stand out clearly. Anybody have a public-domain image of such? (None in the Gallery are suitable.) Casey (talk) 20:37, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Christmas capitalized?

[edit]

I've been retired for nearly 20 years, but don't recall christmas tree being written as a proper noun (even though the oilfield term is derived from the holiday term). Google searches are inconclusive (e.g., http://oilgasglossary.com/christmas-tree.html does NOT, whereas Schlumberger's glossary DOES). Can anybody track down the origin? Who or what group is the final authority Wikipedia should cite? (I suspect copy editors will instinctively capitalize.) What's the consensus here? Casey (talk) 01:27, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
