owl
[edit]The French Wikipedia article says that "Jean Chouan" did take his name from the chat-huant, also called chouette hulotte, and fr:Chouette_hulotte (which mentions chat-huant) says that's Strix aluco, the Tawny Owl. So I changed it. —JerryFriedman 17:02, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
I explained a bit more the etymology of chouan, that's only a western dialectal version developped from the popular Latin cavannus, probably Celtic. The "normal" French word should be something like chahuin, chahuan, "chat-huant" is a wrong writing. C. [edit]Permit me to suggest that the description the passage, “A curious shield of the revolt seems to bear a sort of official use of owls…”, be improved with the inclusion of the illustration entitled "Cachet de l'armée royaliste de Bretagne" https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chouans#/media/File:Cachet_chouan.JPG in the French version of this article.Paul Niquette (talk) 10:16, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
