I rewrote. I could expand, now that I have Chantal Boulanger's book. Pictures desperately needed! Zora 07:14, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, need non-Hindi words for choli. Maybe from sari article? Someone pointed out that I am Hindi-centric and it's unfortunately true. Let's make this inclusive of ALL women who wear cholis. I think choli is now an English word (I see it in books and online shops) but the article should let readers know that it is not called choli all over India. Zora 05:22, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hindugal 13:35, 4 November 2006 (UTC) I have added two pictures with proper attribution. Administrator, please don't remove them. One of the pictures is freely available in brochures of the product. The site looks much better now; earlier it was bland.[reply]

Pattern for backless choli

[edit]

Someone added a note re belly dancers wearing cholis. I rewrote it. As to the link the new editor added -- the link shows people how to sew their own backless cholis, which is good, but it also includes a very low-key ad for pre-sewn cholis. Usually we don't accept any commercial links. I hate to throw out this one, but if we leave it, then other would-be commercial advertisers are going to cry foul. Perhaps we can ask the website owner to redo the page and leave off the ad? Zora 20:41, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Historical picture

[edit]

I looked more closely at that "historical picture" and it doesn't seem that either of the women pictured are wearing cholis. They seem to be nude from the waist up. Notice nipples! The face of the reclining woman doesn't look Indian ... I wonder if this was a "spicy" print made to be sold to British soldiers and administrators. I don't think it's an appropriate illustration. I'm going to replace it with another one. Zora 21:48, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article needs a serious clean-up

[edit]

At least the second part of the article ("Contemporary") is mere subjective fashion-journal style. As Wikipedia is not a blog nor a instruction manual, I rather would like this section to be completely removed. Also, the mass of pictures isn't necessary for understanding the concept of a Choli. As it's not even necessary to point out every single detail that may be considered "fashion" somewhere or by someone, it would be enough and much more suitable for an encyclopedia to give an overview about forms and "culture" of modern-day Choli wearing, together with about one or two pictures (perhaps, for the more "curious", a link to Commons underneath). What I consider not only as inappropriate, but partially even "offending", are sentences like these:

  • "Sleeves ending just above the elbows are most flattering for women with plump arms."

This is a very obvious example for subjective style. No one can decide what's "flattering", also "plump arms" is simply demeaning. Wikipedia isn't here to tell people what they should wear, like or do.

  • "Little sleeves ending an inch or two below the shoulder are suitable for young girls and women with slender arms."

Again, who decides that? It's just an opinion.

  • "Mostly suitable to be worn along with transparent saris[13] and give a glamourous diva look."

Mh, maybe I like them more together with a cape because it gives a Superman look ... Well, I think I pointed out clearly why you can't leave that in here as it is. Tubifex (talk) 18:43, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

a Choli is not a "blouse"

[edit]

The article for blouse defines a blouse as "a loose-fitting upper garment... It is typically gathered at the waist (by a waistband or belt) so that it hangs loosely over the wearer's body." [1]

The definition currently given for choli is "a midriff-baring blouse [sic] shell garment ... cut to fit tightly to the body... The choli is usually cropped, allowing exposure of the midriff and the navel" [2]

These two definitions do not agree. A choli is tight-fitting. A blouse hangs loosely. The loose fit of a blouse is a key feature; the verb "[to blouse]" means to hang in loose folds[3]. A less important difference is that choli usually doesn't reach the waist and a blouse is usually tucked in at the waist (which is what causes it to blouse out).

Because it is tight-fitting, a choli should not be called a "blouse". Therefore I have edited the article to remove the word "blouse" from the first sentence.

But what generic garment words should be used? As a speaker of American English, I would consider this garment to fall in the general category of generic shirt, but I understand this term is more specific in British English (and maybe Indian English, too?). For now I have used the word "upper garment". 96.237.177.60 (talk) 14:33, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is a T-shirt.Trish pt7 (talk) 20:54, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

midriff

[edit]

Somethings wrong here. Almost the first thing the lead says is that a choli bares the midriff yet only 1 of the pictures on this page shows that, all the other pictured garments cover the midriff. Either the pictures do not properly represent choli as it is defined or the definition is wrong. I don't know which it is so I won't change anything but someone with knowledge of this garment should either add some photos (and perhaps clarify the current ones) or change the description in the lead. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.20.55.225 (talk) 10:51, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalim issue

[edit]

@Chaheel Riens: Hello. We have had this issue with him before, a mod also confronted him before. Please lease look at his history. It's very problematic. He has fetishsihes/sexualizes womens clothing pages and floods it with unnecessary images of celebrities/women with skimpiest clothes. English is not my first language but i will try to find that mod who noted this as well and put a stop to him for a while but he is now back again. 117.192.209.24 (talk) 09:07, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Btw, these below links were not added by me here but was in above section. No idea how to fix it. 09:09, 17 September 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.192.209.24 (talk)

Please point out using diffs where this issue has arisen, and also please point out why the images do not come under WP:CENSOR. I've looked through the page history, and can see nothing to support your claim so far?
You don't fix the links below, they're references for the A Choli is not a blouse section above, and supposed to be there. Chaheel Riens (talk) 09:24, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaheel Riens: I am trying to find the that user who confronted him after various vandalism. He use to edit on various South Asian women clothing related pages.
These are his recent edits https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Special:Contributions/47.8.9.145. He does not care about either history of clothing or it current use. But, edits it with images of celebrities along with commentary on their plunging necklines and backless cholis.
Additionally, many of these fashion-journal type links are not reliable sources. Backless cholis have always existed (See history section for more info on this) and were not popularized by anyone. He floods page of celebrity images with links to fashion journalism to justify his use of those images on the page.
Also, about these links below - they were not added by me but by above section called "Midriff" but it ended up under mine. 117.192.209.24 (talk) 10:19, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Where is your good faith? More to the point - what is actually wrong with the images inserted by the IP editor? Apart from WP:IDONTLIKEIT there seems no reason behind your removal - other than wP:CENSOR, which I've already mentioned.
And yes, I know about the references - I've already told you where they're coming from, and it's not the Midriff section. Your failure to pay attention to my comments both here and elsewhere is a concern. Chaheel Riens (talk) 11:37, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
People come here to learn about basic history of this garment and not how "plunging" the neckline of TV actress is and how backless a choli of Bollywood actress is because of an editors fetish. These images were chosen for a reason, for sexualised and fetished purpose. 117.192.209.24 (talk) 11:57, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think they were chosen to show a backless Choli, (although I will concede that only a single image is really necessary, not two,) and the plunging neckline of the recenht Choli. It seems that if you find such images to be sexualised and a fetish, then you're probably the one with the problem, not necessarily anybody else. WP:CENSOR was created for exactly this reason - just because you find an image to be distasteful does not exclude it from the encyclopedia. You claim that the sources are not valid - at least one of them regarding "plunging necklines" is from The Times of India - the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard considers this to be a reliable source - even if you don't.
