[edit]What is the evidence for this: In the beginning chess was only played by peers at the court. It seems a difficult possition to defend.
In any case, it leaves the wrong impression, as chess appears to have become quite popular. -- Jake 17:44, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
- In the first par, it says evidence points to an 11 C entry "at the very earliest"... and two sentences later, other evidence is suggesting as early as 900 AD, ie, the beginning of the 10th C.
