Suggestion: drop the reference to the Philidorian.

Why: the context gives the impression that it was a chess periodical.

It wasn't -- it covered several games (indeed, it got its title from Philidor's ability to play many games well), including draughts, backgammon and whist.

Improving this article

Excellent rewrite! A picture of the front cover would be nice addition. Also google books has a lot of volumes available for browsing. See [1]. Some of them are titled, "second series", "third series" and "new series" It would be nice to have dates and volume numbers for these. Voorlandt (talk) 09:23, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
