IS cheerleading a sport?
[edit]As seen by the main cheerleading page, it is not a sport. IT is "an intense physical activity" that requires athletics. Sport is a notoriously hard word to define and the main purpose of most of cheer is not competition. - I'm not convinced that this subject deserves a UK article at all. Yes, some British schools allow girls to do this in a fairly desperate attempt to get them to take any exercise at all, but it's hardly a mainstream activity here. It's very much a part of US high school sport and seems very alien in the UK, where American football and baseball are tiny minority sports. --Ef80 (talk) 00:14, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes For anyone reading this now decade-old discussion, a current citation from the BBC states that this sport now has around 89,000 cheerleaders in the UK with England having over 900 teams. The article Cheerleading in Australia shows the sport has exploded in growth there, so not surprising there has been huge growth in the United Kingdom as well. 24.214.60.151 (talk) 00:00, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
