Branches (section needs updating)

The article states that there are 48 branches. In fact, there are now 52 branches, as quoted on page 10 of the CIPD’s Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 30 June 2014 (http://www.cipd.co.uk/binaries/report-and-financial-statements_2014.pdf). A full list of the 52 branches can be found at http://www.cipd.co.uk/branches/branchfinder.htm

I'd be grateful if someone could update the article accordingly. KatyAdalar (talk) 12:18, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Public Policy (section needs updating)

The description of the Labour Market Outlook is not accurate. It is no longer produced in partnership with KMPG and it is not accurate to say that it contains the latest employment figures and trends (this implies that it reports the official employment statistics). In fact, it is a survey of employers about key HR, economic and labour market statistics and it serves as a forward looking indicator of employment trends because it asks employers about their intentions in terms of recruitment activity and pay decisions. See here for some independent references: http://www.businessfirstmagazine.co.uk/companies-news/CIPD-Labour-Market-Outlook, http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/2d549536-956a-11e3-8371-00144feab7de.html#axzz3REbO9d7R, http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/a6044550-e489-11e1-affe-00144feab49a.html#axzz3REbO9d7R, http://www.webrecruit.co.uk/employer-blog/hr-professional/dissecting-latest-cipd-labour-market-outlook-report

John Philpott is no longer chief economist. He was replaced by Mark Beatson in November 2012 (http://www.cipd.co.uk/pressoffice/press-releases/cipd-appoints-mark-beatson-chief-economist-291112.aspx). Recent sources quoting Mark Beatson include: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/365db18c-8f6d-11e4-9ea4-00144feabdc0.html#axzz3REbO9d7R and http://www.cityam.com/206273/uk-wage-growth-will-struggle-until-2016

I'd be grateful if someone could update the article accordingly.KatyAdalar (talk) 16:07, 9 February 2015 (UTC)

Improving the quality of this article

My name is Katy Adalar and I am the corporate communications manager at the CIPD. I've noticed that there is a fair amount of outdated and inaccurate information on the CIPD article. I don't plan to edit the article myself as I have an obvious conflict of interest, but I was wondering if there are any Wikipedians out there who'd be willing to do a bit of editing if I were to point out some of the areas for improvement. I'll post some examples of the outdated/inaccurate information in this talk page over the coming days/months, along with suggested revisions and sources. I'm new to Wikipedia and very keen to respect the norms of the community, so would welcome any feedback and advice on my approach KatyAdalar (talk) 14:34, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Katy, Happy to help out. Kmow the subject quite well. I would like to see some work done on the origins and history if you have a way of supplying some source documents/material as this section is vey poor and if filled out properly would begin to balance the article which appears like a brochure with menu courses etc at the moment.Tmol42 (talk) 21:38, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Tmol42, thanks for the quick response. I'll start adding in some things that need updating. In the meantime, here's a link to some information on the CIPD's history and origins: http://www.cipd.co.uk/cipd-hr-profession/centenary/timeline.aspx (although it's taken from the CIPD's website, it is fact-based and written in a neutral tone - it was written by John Philpott, former chief economist at the CIPD, after he left the CIPD). Speaking of which, perhaps one of the easiest inaccuracies we could correct in this article is the reference to John Philpott - he is no longer chief economist. Mark Beatson was appointed chief economist in November 2012 (http://www.cipd.co.uk/pressoffice/press-releases/cipd-appoints-mark-beatson-chief-economist-291112.aspx). He too is quoted frequently in the media and I could provide some more contemporary links than the ones currently referenced in the article. KatyAdalar (talk) 09:14, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Done I have updated the history using the source provided and a couple of others I found. There would be scope to add more about the later period, to do this the book to access is Personnel Management 1913-1967 by M Niven published by IPM. Worth discussing off line?Tmol42 (talk) 23:46, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
@Tmol42: thanks for the work you've done on the article - it's looking in much better shape already. There are still some inaccuracies in the way the membership grades and qualifications are described. I'm just working with some colleagues here at the CIPD to make sure I have my facts straight (and hopefully some independent references) before I post some more updates here. I'd be grateful if you could keep an eye on this Talk page and help with further edits once I've been able to point you in the right direction. Regarding the additional work you've suggested in the history section, I'd be happy to discuss this with you off line. CIPD membership (section needs updating)

There are some inaccuracies in the section on CIPD Membership. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I can’t find any independent sources that describe the entry criteria and upgrade process accurately. Nevertheless, I’d be grateful if you could update the article as you see fit, based on the information I’m providing here:

1.It might be useful to note the distinction between professional membership and non-professional membership (which is different from the distinction between chartered and non-chartered). The professional grades of membership are the only ones that give members a designation (letters after their name). They are Associate, Chartered Member, Chartered Fellow, Chartered Companion, Academic Member and Academic Fellow. In addition, there are two non-professional membership grades: Affiliate and Student.

2.In the description of Chartered Fellow, the article states that applicants must have at least 10 years’ experience. This is not accurate. Eligibility for this grade of membership is not related to years of service. Rather it’s based on the individual’s ability to demonstrate the long term strategic impact they make in their work (i.e. working on a strategic time frame of at least three years). They must provide evidence of this during an upgrade assessment, which can be done by completing a form, or via a telephone or face to face interview. More information is available here: http://www.cipd.co.uk/membership/upgrading/upgrading-chartered-fellow.aspx

3.In the description of Chartered Member, the article says it is awarded on request to graduate members. This is not accurate. Firstly, the graduate grade no longer exists. Secondly, membership upgrades are awarded by means of an assessment process, not simply on request and not simply based on years of experience. Associate members can apply to upgrade to Chartered Member by form, phone or face to face (more info here: http://www.cipd.co.uk/membership/upgrading/upgrading-chartered-member.aspx). Individuals can also apply to become a Chartered Member directly, via the Experience Assessment route (more info here: http://www.cipd.co.uk/membership/experience-assessment/about-experience-assessment.aspx).

4.The article states that the Associate grade was introduced in 2010 and replaced the graduate grade. This isn’t true. Associate grade existed before 2010, but it wasn’t classified as a professional grade of membership until 2010. Associate Membership did not directly replace Graduate Membership. The two existed alongside each other for some time, but the Graduate grade has since been phased out and existing Graduate Members were transferred into Associate Membership (unless they chose to upgrade to one of the Chartered Grades). Associate Membership is for individuals who have completed the required CIPD (or CIPD recognised) qualifications, or have demonstrated the required knowledge and competencies via the Experience Assessment route.

Let me know if you need any further information or clarification in updating this section of the article. KatyAdalar (talk) 15:28, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Professional qualifications (section has been deleted)

I notice that the section on professional qualifications has been deleted. I'm not surprised as it was very out of date and overly complex. Let me know if anyone would like to add a simpler section on qualifications back in and I'd be happy to provide the relevant information. (Please note I'm on annual leave until 2 March so won't be reviewing this talk page again until then). KatyAdalar (talk) 15:32, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Introductory paragraph (needs updating)

The introductory paragraph describes the CIPD as an association for human resource professionals. In fact, since the IPM merged with the ITD, (as detailed in the history section of this article), the CIPD is not just for human resource professionals. It is also for learning and development (L&D) professionals (some people class L&D as a subset of HR, but many consider it a separate discipline). Many of the CIPD's members also specialise in organisation development (OD) - again, some class this as a subset of HR, but others consider it a separate discipline. The CIPD's preferred description which we feel is more inclusive of all these groups is 'the professional body for HR and people development' but I understand that we don't get to choose how we are described in this article :-) KatyAdalar (talk) 15:58, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

CIPD logo (needs updating)

The CIPD refreshed its brand identity in January 2015, so the logo displayed in the top right of this article is out of date. What's the best way to get this updated? KatyAdalar (talk) 15:59, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

The logo can be updated by adding an updated .png image at the image page. It would seem to me that you would not be infringing any policies by adding an up to date logo there by following the updating instructions. There is a licencing template on this page which sets out limits the logos use. Tmol42 (talk) 17:33, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

Bye-laws, people!

I copied info about the mission statement and the charter and bye-laws from the CIPD's website but I've removed this info as I don't understand how to reference it. Please don't delete the page as I've removed the content that was copied. Thanks. (Aligilbertson (talk) 09:48, 22 July 2008 (UTC))

Not all of the copied material has been removed (see here). Some other text has been slightly paraphrased, but this should reference the source. Booglamay (talk) 13:36, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
