Misner pronunciation
[edit]Thanking Omnipaedista for including the IPA.
Fellow undergrads at my college had mangled his name (mispronounced as like "miser" rather than "mister"), and I didn't realize this until I saw the Japanese translation of MTW being invoked at ja:cite book (as ミスナー et al.). --Kiyoweap (talk) 15:55, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- We're to assume a Japanese spelling of an American's surname is proof of correct pronunciation? Perhaps whoever transliterated his name into Japanese was mistaken about the pronunciation. The vast majority (perhaps all) of Americans with the Misner surname pronounce it /ˈmaɪznər/, however, I can't find any source for how Charles pronounced his own surname. I also couldn't find anyone else with the same surname who pronounces it /ˈmɪsnər/. There's flex culture influencer type who goes by /ˈmɪznər/, but he appears to be an Aussie. 68.193.141.193 (talk) 22:26, 21 September 2024 (UTC)corpho
- Ha, I spoke too soon. I just found two reliable video sources on YouTube titled "Misner Symposium Ted Jacobson", and "MTW@50: a 50th anniversary celebration of "Gravitation" by Misner, Thorne and Wheeler", in which all the speakers (including Kip Thorne, a collaborator of Misner's) pronounce his name /ˈmɪznər/. 68.193.141.193 (talk) 22:44, 21 September 2024 (UTC)corpho
