Olofsson was a proper family name?
[edit]In the article it currently says:
- When his father, Carl Magnus Olofsson, came to America from Sweden, the family name was changed to Walgreen.
It's likely that the father, Carl Magnus Olofsson, was born in the 1840's. Since he was born in the 1840's, Olofsson was most certainly a patronymic surname (the father's name being Olof), not a proper family name. Then it's meaningless to claim that "the family name was changed to Walgreen". One should rather say "Carl Magnus Olofsson adopted the family name Walgreen", or something like that. (Interestingly, Walgreen is very similar to the Swedish family name Wahlgren.) // JiPe (81.235.129.208 (talk) 19:01, 30 January 2010 (UTC))
- In the Google Books, America's Corner Store: Walgreen's Prescription for Success says:
- In the 1790s, Charles's great-great-great-grandfather, Sven Olofsson, adopted the surname "Wahlgren" (Swedish pronunciation: [vɑːlgreːn]) during his military service, a family fact passed down over the generations. When Wahlgreen's father, Carl Magnus Olofsson, arrived in America, he decided - fo reasons lost to us now - to change the family name Walgreen.

- In the Swedish Military it was forbidden for 2 people in the same unit to have the same name. The second person joining that unit was used a nickname or was assigned a new name and that is probably where he got the walgreens name from.
- "... In the Articles of War, which Gustavus Vasa signed on 20 Sept. 1557 it
- was said that when soldiers were mustered into the army they were to be
- recorded with their correct Christian or baptismal name, a by- name and
- place of birth. By- name in this context meant the additional name or
- nickname, by which the young farmer boy or hired hand was known among
- his friends and acquaintances.
- ...
- It was the company commander, usually a captain, who decided the
- names the recruits should have. Eas;h infantry regiment had 150 rotar or
- military districts and each rote was named for the first soldier assigned to
- that district. His name was then inherited by the soldiers, which followed
- him, even though the former occupant and the present occupant were not
- related. ..."

- In the Google Books, America's Corner Store: Walgreen's Prescription for Success says:
My great great great great grandfather changed our last name when a family member murdered a politician then fled to America. Some Olofsson's spelled it Walgreen other family members spelled it Wahlgren. I believe because of miscommunication it was misspelled. That is the story my grandfather and grandmother told me when I was young. Juliewahlgren80 (talk) 16:27, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
