Education

[edit]

Possible this is the "Jones, Charles Ernest: B.A. 11; B.Sc.13" of [1], graduate of the University of London 1911 and 1913. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:49, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Made likely by an entry "1917 Jones, Charles Ernest, B.A., B.Sc. (Lond.), C.C.S., Education Office, Colombo" in a list of members of the Asiatic Society at https://www.jstor.org/stable/43474070. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:53, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Background

[edit]

Based on a 1946 directory, he joined the Ceylon Civil Service around 1915. [2] gives a date of 28 November 1914. Charles Matthews (talk) 07:03, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

He married in 1923 Hilda Yorath, youngest daughter of the late George Yorath of Ross-on-Wye (Portsmouth Evening News, 10 November 1923). That report is not completely legible to me, but his father is possibly K. C. Jones; address Drayton, Hants. Charles and Hilda had one son (Kelly's Directory 1961 page 1132). For identification with the father of Arnold Nelson Jones at http://www.thepeerage.com/p42903.htm#i429022, need more. Charles Matthews (talk) 07:56, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ah good, day before in the Portsmouth Evening News gives clearer reading: only son cf Mr. E. H. Jones, of Drayton, Hants. Charles Matthews (talk) 08:07, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like Arnold Nelson Jones was Canadian, connected with Olds, Alberta. So I believe Charles Ernest Jones in The Peerage is more likely someone else (it is a common enough name). Charles Matthews (talk) 08:25, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And [3] says that Charles Ernest Jones was from Kansas. Charles Matthews (talk) 09:57, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The father was Edwin Harris Jones R.N.: found in his funeral notice 28 August 1925, Portsmouth Evening News. Charles Matthews (talk) 19:11, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Later career

[edit]

The acting Finance Secretary positions are given in [4] p. 186. I believe Jayewardene was Finance Minister from the beginning of dominion status for Ceylon. [5] gives background on the civil service changes of 1948. Ideal references are not to hand for these points. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:06, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
