Champerty in New York

[edit]

New York goes unmentioned in the United States section, but the Champerty law there is getting mentions due to Paul Singer (businessman)'s interaction with Samuel Alito where a later overturned decision in a suit between Singer’s Elliott Associates and Peru initially resulted in EA losing because of what is described as NY's Champerty laws. This is just a heads-up in case anyone wants to add New York as I have not myself looked into the details.Andyvphil (talk) 10:02, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uninterested vs. Disinterested

[edit]

It seems that the mentioned 3rd party should be characterized to be disinterested rather than uninterested in keeping with the current usage of the words, to mean that they don't have any sort of stake in the outcome of events. Clearly this is a bit [[1]]. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.213.37.244 (talk) 14:04, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Name of article

[edit]

Hmmm ... not many people come here. I think that this article's name should change to Champerty and maintenance. The link to maintenance currently links to lawsuit where it is not mentioned. Any discussion of the two is linked.Cutler (talk) 10:34, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Probably needs some disambiguation, but "maintenance" in the legal sense I think is normally used in the matrimonial law sense. Perhaps move this article to champerty and maintenance, put a redirect here, and replace the maintenance redirect with a disambiguation page? --Legis (talk - contribs) 18:09, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just linked "maintenance" to that page as it is a dab page and the legal meaning was already there.Cutler (talk) 18:47, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Worldwide view - needs clarification

[edit]

Looks very U.S. at the moment. There have been important recent developments in England and Wales. As to elsewhere .... ?Cutler (talk) 10:34, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has been on my "to do" list forever to put more in about the English / Commonwealth position. Like all these things, I suppose I will get to it forever. --Legis (talk - contribs) 18:09, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I did a quick lashup that I hope will be a foundation for others to build on.Cutler (talk) 19:47, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Needs a Few More Examples

[edit]

As a user of this page trying to understand champerty, I found it a bit difficult. Could it maybe use a bit less legalistic language and a few more examples? Thanks! 122.163.199.204 (talk) 07:45, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge Champertor here

[edit]

I suggest that the article Champertor be merged with this article as I cannot see any prospect of the former being further developed. Tim! (talk) 17:08, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea. The Champertor article contains Cyclopedia content; it's probably better practice to reference it rather than incorporate it directly (so as to make clear what's from which source in the larger Champerty and maintenance article). TheFeds 17:44, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Support merge. A champertor is simply one who commits champerty.—Finell 23:04, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Support merge, with reservations. Though champerty and/or maintenance, as tort and/or crime have been pretty well abolished by statute in most common law jurisdictions, they are historical causes of action. They would hold their place in the Wikepedia as of 13:29, 14 February 1910 (UTC). Then again, in that en.wikipedia, there would probably be just the one article for "landau" and 400+ fanboycrufty articles for Buggy whip makers. Or something like that.

I agree with the merge.JJGators (talk) 00:28, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Overlapping pages

[edit]

The pages on Litigation funding, Legal financing and Champerty (this one) overlap. Also 'litigation finance'. Room for at least one merger. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.119.117.119 (talk) 07:53, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
