Various Inquiries

[edit]

I received information that this page was created by the former curator of the Museum (Chateau Meudon). Is there any possibility for me to get in touch with the person? I have several inquiries related with Chateau Versailles. The Library and the National Archives won't answer me. Can I get help? 182.0.167.213 (talk) 22:52, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I first found this article as a bad machine translation from French. I would suggest looking at the history of the article on the French-language Wikipedia. If the author there used their actual name as a user name, you may be able to confirm your hypothesis, but user privacy is an important policy on Wikipedia and it may impede your inquiry.
It is probably more straightforward, if you have questions about Versailles, to ask at the talk page of that article on either the English or French language Wikipedia. Alternately, en-wikipedia has a Reference Desk that can be quite helpful; not sure whether the French Wikipedia has an equivalent. I probably don't know the answer to your questions but would be happy to help you with any difficulties you may have in navigating Wikipedia. Aerostats and the Observatory of Paris

[edit]

Note to self and/or anyone else such as Scope creep who might conceivably be interested: Might be an idea to move some of the many images of the Observatory to the article specifically about that buiding, if there is one, or even to create an article if one doesn't exist. Also, the throwaway mention of aerostats, which apparently the revolutionary government was researching for defense purposes (!) is probably also notable independent of its location in a former royal palace and might even make a good DYK entry at some point. Elinruby (talk) 20:54, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Elinruby: I noticed there was a lot of images on it. I was thinking of using the template:multiple image to group a lot of them between sections. It seems to be what folk do when there is a massive number of images. scope_creepTalk 21:06, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If they could be moved into the middle of the section instead of both sides and the middle, it might bring some consistency. Use the side for the most important ones. Will I do a couple of sections and see what you think? I think they need to be smaller. Hannah Arendt is a good example of the type of template discussed above. You can see there is a ton of images and they are smaller and are grouped by function. I'm doing the same thing on Lister. scope_creepTalk 21:15, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(ec)::Thanks for your interest. I am completely open to suggestions on the images. All of my recent edits summarized as "gallery fix" were to address the fact that someone had set mode="packed', which, at least on my Android, superimposed the often quite long captions on top of the images. So that is no longer a problem, but doesn't mean the use of images is ideal in thus article, nor am I under any illusion that it is.

I should also mention that due to the above IP's question I have verified that the original author of the French article that someone badly translated does indeed edit under what looks like a real name and says on his user page that he is an art historian. I didn't follow this up to the extent of verifying that he either is or was the curator of Meudon's museum, but it seems highly plausible and in particular would explain some of the writing. What I did do is ask at the Original Research noticeboard if there was any problem with using his re-creations of how the palace ie looked in 1520, since these might be hard to cite independently, which was my solution to the similar situation with the Jublains article. I got one answer citing a policy I hadn't noted, which was that images are ok as long as what they represent has been previously discussed. At second glance a lot of the text actually does consist of long descriptions from the period of the palace and its appointments so no problem there. However I probably need to go look at what happened in the translation of some of these descriptions, as, for example, I question whether that one 18th-century Frenchman really would have measured distances in yards.
Another editor suggested making the author provide references (unlikely) and once he understood the provenance of the article expressed both sympathy and DUE concerns. I somewhat agree with him about the latter but I think that a lot could be done, before we cull the herd, with making image placement less haphazard. There are however a couple of images which imo should either have their contrast enhanced (which I can do) or be deleted altogether, or perhaps instead moved to articles about the people who created what they portray. I also question whether, important as the palace may be, it is DUE to get into the layout of the rooms on the third floor.
I am deeply involved in some other stuff, about which I may message you separately, so for the moment my own plan for this article is to a) address the translation of the antique French b) look at whether some of the images could/should move to other articles. We have, for example, half a dozen images of the the observatory, which is definitely notable, but more notable than Mme de Pompadour, of whom a portrait surely exists? Feel free to help with any of that, but although side-by-side comparisons are difficult on my current tech setup, I am probably better equipped than many other people to catch translation problems, so I should make sure I cover that.
On a side note, I saw, then misplaced, a reference to "ice". "Glace' should definitely have been translated as "mirror" there, if you come across that. One of many tells in this article that make me say that it was defintely an early-version machine translation. Please feel free to add a what tag to any text you can't understand, as I am not sure that I caught all of the other weirdnesses like incorrect translation of pronouns. Elinruby (talk) 22:15, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
TL;DR yeah do a couple of sections and ping me; I will then make sure it's readable on mobile. Thanks Elinruby (talk) 22:18, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Scope creep: Actually, I don't even think you need to ping me. I just looked at the Lister and Hannah Arendt articles, which gracefully adapt for my Android, so if you are proposing to use the same template here, I am sure it will be fine.
Go for it. My only comment at this point is that some of the images might could use a move to a different section, and it isn't actually clear to me that all of them need to be included.
And probably Mme de Pompadour should have a portrait also, for example. Elinruby (talk) 23:08, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Paris Observatory could probably use some more images. I'll do this unless you get around to it first Elinruby (talk) 00:18, 1 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

capucine woodwork

[edit]

This is mentioned a couple-three times and could use some elucidation. We don't have an article on this in either language, and it seems to me that the word usually refers to a specific religious order, so this may be difficult to Google. I think the article says that gilt is involved, which seems likely, but an image or better reference would be welcome. I'd also like to verify whether there is anything special about the way it should be translated Elinruby (talk) 22:52, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fact checking note: the Antoine Sanguin who was a cardinal and ordered the castle's demolition was the son of the Antoine Sanguin who married Marie Simon. At least according to english Wikipedia. at some point it would be good to reword that to make that xlear. Elinruby (talk) 02:15, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
