Reference

[edit]

A reference has been asked to specify where Chateau Bilstein is near GR 5. I have no idea where to find such a reference. But what I can do is give my view on this. If you walk GR 5 from Aubure to Ribeauvillé (which also has a few nice ruins: The Château de Saint-Ulrich, Château du Girsberg and Château du Haut-Ribeaupierre), between le sapin des Francais and Col de Seelacker there is a path which leads to the ruin. The other option is to walk the chemin des châteaux forts d’Alsace (stage 20). If you go south from Chateau de Bilstein, this path takes part of GR 5 before going on to a path to Château de Reichenstein. John Do'h 13:38, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If it's a significant detail rather than merely trivial (which is dubious) it needs to be properly referenced. You may well be right in what you say above, but that, of course, is original research and as such is not acceptable. Emeraude (talk) 10:32, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If what I do on my holiday is considered Original Research, so be it. I just walked a path which is publicly accesible, and well described. I used IGN 3717ET, on which le sapin des Francais and Col de Seelacker are clearly marked. You can verify that on the IGNrando website. For copyright reasons I cannot upload that part of the map to Wikipedia (although such a detail may be considered fair use). The chemin des châteaux forts d’Alsace is also public and is adequately described on their website (this webpage contains an interactive map, although GR 5 is not named). If Wikipedia feels that this entry is not relevant, but merely trivial, feel free to remove it. BTW in the references to the article, there seems to be some confusion, even, in Base Merimée: it says Chateau de Bilstein Lorrain, which, IMHO, should be Chateau du Bilstein Lorrain, but I am not a native Francophone, so what do I know? John Do'h 17:55, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No need to be a native or even non-native Francophone: you're absolutely right about the Merimée inconsistency. The titles currently given in the article are as they appear on the Merimée site.
As to original research, I'm not doubting that you are correct, but Wikipedia requires independent reliable sources, not what you or I know or believe to be true. It could be that "IGN map 3717ET" is sufficient as a a reliable source. I don't know, I don't have a copy, but there's no reason why you can't use it as a reference (no need for a copy to be uploaded) in good faith. The other issue is whether or not the fact that the castle is near a long-distance footpath is of any significance. It tells us nothing about the castle, after all. Do we mention every footpath that goes near every other ancient monument? Emeraude (talk) 12:03, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would agree that mentioning every long distance footpath may not be relevant. But there is an entry in Wikipedia on GR 5. If someone is interested in Chateau de Bilstein (for whatever reason) they may want to visit it. Pointing out that it is near GR 5 (which is how I found it) can be of some help. Personally I think there should be an article about Le Chemin des châteaux forts as it is an interesting (in my mind) route for visiting the many, many, ruins in Alsace, if only if you want to visit a few. This would eliminate the need for mentioning long distance paths in every article, as you can refer to the article. The route is marked on the maps produced by IGN, so it should be easy to follow. The website has a fiche about most of the ruins, often including a history and description. Maybe it is just me, but I find this very interesting (although I have no idea of how accurate they are). And has resulted in me visiting many of these ruins. John Do'h 14:42, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you could write an article on Le Chemin des châteaux forts. Seems an eminently suitable subject for an article. I've added IGN map 3717ET as a ref for you but it's a shame that there does not seem to be an online version that could be linked. Emeraude (talk) 09:08, 11 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have done as you asked and created an article which is currently under review: Draft:Le chemin des châteaux forts d’Alsace. The article is far from finished, but I am not going to put any more effort in it until it has been approved (otherwise it will just be a waste of my time).John Do'h 00:06, 14 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It has proven to be a waste of my time as the article was rejected. Too bad. John Do'h 01:08, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
