copyright?

[edit]

I don't know where this is from, but it reads as if copied from some other source. It's definitely not an encyclopedia article--jacobolus (t) 15:03, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It reads like a school or college essay or project, so you may be right; however, until the copyright can be addressed, I'm going to rewrite this page to make it more readable and wikipedia-standard. I can't check the facts as I don't know more about the topic than the original author, I'm just going to improve the readability, grammar and remove irrelevancies, that sort of thing. as a result I'll leave the author's citations intact, so perhaps they can fill in more details on their bibliographical sources at a later time. --Urbane legend 28 June 2005 16:42 (UTC)
Its hard to tell if About Cats by Nicolae Sfetcu is the source or if it is simply plagarising wikipedia, but the Bubastis and the Cult of the Cat section and onwards are identical.  M3TAinfo (view) 16:04, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite (finished!)

[edit]

I've spent a good while revising this page, removing some irrelevancies and altering the style for improved readability. I thought the section on Ra and his nightly journey through the underworld was irrelevant as it did not mention cats and there was only one passing mention of Bast. It's also covered in the main article on Ra. There are some facts I'm uncertain of, particularly the "tribal" sociology of Ancient Egypt - I'm unable to verify whether or not this is true, so I've given the original author the benefit of my doubt. I think the section on the Black Death may be irrelevant; I may cut it down or remove it when I have had a chance to reread the article properly. I have also left intact the original author's method of treating citations as I do not know the sources used, and I figure that by leaving them in place those who do know might be able to correct this. I know there's more work to do but I think I've broken the back of it, and it's getting rather late! --Urbane legend 28 June 2005 23:36 (UTC)

I've had another read and made a few more edits today, including removing much of the Black Death segment. It's irrelevant, and the importance of the cat in ending the plague seems to be overstated by the original author. Cats aren't mentioned at all in the entry for Black death. --Urbane legend 29 June 2005 12:20 (UTC)
It's coming along very nicely. Keep up the good work. Hajor 29 June 2005 12:54 (UTC)
Thank you for your kind comment. The rewrite is now finished (or at least, as finished as anything can be on wikipedia!. There's a lot of new information added, irrelevant or unsubstantiated statements and passages removed, original information rewritten, removal of irrelevant intrawiki links, bibliography tracked down, and I've read the article about fifty times now and can't see any SPAG errors either, though they may be there anyway. I shan't be (too) offended by any tweaks! --Urbane legend 1 July 2005 01:51 (UTC)

Introduction

[edit]

I placed the intro-rewrite tage because the introduction has nothing to do with cat in ancient egypt. It talks about statistics in the United States which has nothing to do with this topic. It would be nice for someone who knows something about this topic to rewrite and replace the current intoduction. --Tainter 18:24, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm rewriting the intro, and eventually the entire article. It has a lot of useful information but isn't assembled or organised meaningfully, and the page has no citations or references. I'll work on it :) -- Editor at Largetalk 11:21, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article: "Cats in ancient Egypt." Section: "Cats in other religions"?

The whole tone of this article seems very passively voiced, didactic, and meandering. I started with the opening phrase but became frustrated with the poor prose. I agree with the person below- merge the articles, or beef up both of them? I have no idea if this suggestion is going to the right place. Don't hate my IP. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.10.219.69 (talk) 12:51, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've never learned to do this but how do I nominate to have 2 articles merged? This and the History of cats article (which is completely lacking in history and just mentions some mythology stuff from not Egypt), I don't see enough in the other religions yet to warrant a stub for a couple of sentences about black cats, cait sidhe, maneki neko and Frejya using them as steeds for her chariot. In Cats in Mythology Article we could have them all together comprehnsive like, mostly dominated by this with the other stuff off with Mohammed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.137.207.191 (talk) 13:52, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the articles should be merged as both pages have enough content to warrant separate articles, but I agree that there should be a Cats in mythology article. There are many references to lions and tiger in various cultural mythologies, it would be nice to have an article bringing together all of these ideas.--Kpstewart (talk) 02:04, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cats In Everyday Life?

[edit]

I doubt there's any hard data related to this. So far, the words are speculation even if very likely. Codwiki (talk) 20:37, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You need to be much more specific before we can discuss this and make changes as necessary. Rissa, Guild of Copy Editors (talk) 05:24, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Like the message at the top from 2008 says. On this page https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Pope_Gregory_IX#Demonization_of_cats it uses the sources: [1]

[4] This Vox Rama https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Vox_in_Rama apparently shows catholics of that time thought there was a satanic cult headed by a black cat. How is this related to ancient Egypt? It is possible that the black death originated in ancient Egypt: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/03/0310_040310_blackdeath.html and the wiki article here already says cats were valued for hunting vermin such as rats. Anyway I am planning on making some edits. Popish Plot (talk) 14:40, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cats didn't have anything to do with the Black Death other than kill rats infested with the fleas that carried the bacterium. That's interesting about it originating in Egypt/North Africa. Rissa, Guild of Copy Editors (talk) 04:46, 17 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

When were cats domesticated in Egypt?

[edit]

There should be a general date here for when the Egyptians domesticated cats. Rissa, Guild of Copy Editors (talk) 04:38, 17 October 2015 (UTC) . . .[reply]

Cats?

[edit]

Some of these are depicted as so long-eared and long-limbed... are we sure they are always cats and not servals? Correctrix (talk) 23:15, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Panthera vs Felis sylvestris

[edit]

Lions are "cats" only in a colloquial sense. You removed sourced conten without even trying to explain that. From your edit history I gather you have a thing about lions, but this is about the ordinary housecat (Felis silvestris catus). Kleuske (talk) 11:05, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to address the {{Multiple issues|{{more footnotes|date=October 2015}}{{More citations needed|date=September 2014}}}} and improving this page. And all you do, is reverting to the same unimproved state of 4 years ago. This is extremely frustrating!! Why don't you help to improve it instead of disrupt such efforts? -- BhagyaMani (talk) 11:25, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, add citations. Do not delete content. Kleuske (talk) 11:43, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That is what I did, adding refs!!! But for the old content, I did not find any reliable ref. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 11:50, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BhagyaMani: On reflection, I think I was wrong, here. Apologies for the inconvenience. Kleuske (talk) 11:59, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I just discovered that large parts of the old content was copy-pasted from this website : see http://ageac.org/en/news/the-veneration-and-worship-of-felines-in-ancient-egypt/ , some statements even word by word. The last remaining one is "In 1888, an Egyptian farmer uncovered a large tomb containing more than eighty thousand mummified cats and kittens outside the town of Beni Hasan." which needs to be rewritten. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 12:18, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BhagyaMani: If there is any text in the article that has been plagiarised from a copyrighted source, you are within your rights (or even obligated) to delete it as a copyright violation (and your should identify that it is a copyvio in your edit summary). For your information if someone restores the content verbatim (that is: without rephrasing it) you are entitled to revert the readdition without it counting toward the three revert rule. Removing copyvio is exemption number 5 to the rule. TheVicarsCat (talk) 12:59, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Well, yes, I know. Am trying to find a source and once found will rewrite this statement. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 13:09, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@BhagyaMani: Probably the best solution all round. Best of luck with the sources. TheVicarsCat (talk) 13:13, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@TheVicarsCat:You may have seen the recent revision of the lead. I leave it up to you to remove or keep the {{Multiple issues}} template before this section. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 16:44, 6 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

revert?

[edit]

@MONGO: As mentioned in my edits, large parts of the content that you restored constitute copy-vio, as this was copy-pasted word by word from a book. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 16:18, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

My click was accidental.--MONGO (talk) 21:03, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

section 0

[edit]

"Cats in ancient Egypt were mummified and buried in large quantities, hence held a special place in the culture of Ancient Egypt. "

I've written similar, attempting to accommodate the constraint of our style, but I am imagining something is firing correctly today may have an improvement. First things first?:

"Cats in ancient Egypt were widely represented in the iconography and social or religious practices of Ancient Egypt, fulfilling a practical role in the region's culture during life and were often mummified and entombed."

Without reading through the article, this may set things up for the rest of the content. cygnis insignis 06:02, 24 November 2018 (UTC) [edit 06:09, 24 November 2018 (UTC)][reply]

Hello

I am new to Wikipedia and I am currently working on a project for a class. I noticed that this article could be improved and I will be working over the next 2 weeks on it. I would love to hear from anyone who has any suggestions or concerns. I will be working on it in my sandbox User:NZMKZ/sandboxcats before I publish any changes. NZMKZ (talk) 15:45, 1 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dear all I have been working on improving this article in my sandbox. I will start implementing the changes on the article in the upcoming few days. If you have any questions/ concern/ ideas let me know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NZMKZ (talkcontribs) 19:24, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's not necessary to advertise for a specific book and author in the text itself. Make sure that your additions do NOT constitute WP:COPYVIO. Info about process of mummification can be found in already cited sources, e.g. <ref name=Ikram2015/> -- BhagyaMani (talk) 19:30, 10 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
