Since the word has a Spanish origin, ll might be pronounced like y in English, I think. This may or may not hold right here. Shouldn't the correct pronunciation be specified? Vanischenu mTalk 02:30, 15 July 2012 (UTC) modified on Vanischenu mTalk02:33, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There really isn't a single standard for pronunciation of scientific names. They can be pronunced as close to classical Latin as possible (i.e. with "v" pronunced as "w", and all "c"s pronounced as "k"), which is more common in Europe. In the US, Latinate pronunciation is a little sloppier (and while Latin American botanists hew closer to classical Latin, their "c"s are generally pronounced as "s" or "k" as in Spanish). Many botanists agree that plants named after people should be pronounced as that person pronounced their name, rather than with a Latinate pronunciation. In practice, however, this requires being aware of how to properly pronounce surnames in dozens of languages, and pronounciation often defaults to Latinate.
