[edit]

Added this entry for the Castle dell'Ovo based on info extracted from two books (Napoli - Naples, Edizioni Intra Moenia 2000 and The Medieval Fortress: Castles, Forts and walled cities in the Middle Ages by J.E. Kaufmann and H.W. Kaufmann, Combined Publishing 2001) and my personal experiences from living in Naples for four years.

Romulus Augustus

[edit]

Good article. I made some changes to the section on Romulus Augustus, primarily because the story of his receiving a pension after the abdication comes from one ancient source that is contradicted by at least two others. His fate after the abdication is unclear; Gibbon thought he was dead by the time the monastery was set up, and the letters by Cassiodorus to "Romulus" in 507 do not say Romulus was the same person as the last emperor. My gut feeling is that Romulus was sent as a prisoner to a fortified castle, but the history is too ambiguous to make a conclusion.--Idols of Mud 16:25, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted to my previous, more compact version of the article. The new material added has the fault to be baldy written and sectioned (reference to "ruinous Gothic War", for example, is not so encyclopedical, and has little to do with the Castle itself). Sections were too short. Please add the material to present version, instead of deleting it, or simply improve. Let me know. --Attilios 11:22, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
