CN Real cancelled?

Is there a source for the claim that CN Real has been cancelled? As true as I want it to be, I haven't seen anything official about it anywhere. Kcowolf (talk) 02:33, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Someone put a fan-made logo which looks like the real one, but the "N" was different and the "CARTOON NETWORK" text was white, which can't be seen on a light background. I put back the real logo. Here's the fan-made logo:

File:File-CARTOON NETWORK logo.png
Thanks for the info. It's been reverted and the user who added it has been warned.
Well, actually, I'm pretty sure that isn't a fan made logo. I'm pretty sure I saw that logo on the channel Cartoon Network is on. I think that is Cartoon Network's new logo. --Hadger 22:02, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
The differences are pretty subtle, but the logo here isn't the official logo. The N in the official logo isn't as pointy. It looks like this one is taken from the letters "C" and "N" of the original logo. Kcowolf (talk) 00:01, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

I've been thinking. The article probably needs a "Gallery" section for it's logos. Could it be used? --HIAW! :) (talk) (userboxes) 20:48, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't think so, this is not a fan site. Jj98 (talk) 05:58, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Cartoon Network (United States)Cartoon Network — This is a kids and animated orientated television channel. Cartoon Network (United States) should be moved to Cartoon Network. Also, Cartoon Network should be moved to Cartoon Network (disambiguation).Relisted. Vegaswikian (talk) 22:59, 24 July 2010 (UTC) Jj98 (talk) 00:20, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Support: I agree, it should be. Similar to how the Toon Disney article is set up.--ETLamborghini (talk) 00:35, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose Hardly compares to Toon Disney. That has one other surviving channel, in Italy, using that name. Cartoon Network has 18 other international channels still using the name. No evidence of primary topic is given by the proposer, but it is clear that to most of the world, the American channel is not. Skinsmoke (talk) 03:11, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose the other Toon Disneys are no longer Toon Disneys according to the dab page. 76.66.193.119 (talk) 04:32, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The article is only about the US channel as it stands. If it were renamed as proposed, then the scope of the article should be expanded to include all the other (related) channels internationally. Even in the USA, the phrase Cartoon Network would most naturally mean the whole of the network, not just the US channel of it; When someone in the US uses it to mean just the US channel, then either they are knowingly using it as a shortened name or they are unaware of the existence of the rest of the network, and either way, this usage shouldn't restrict the scope of our article by that name. However I'm not in favour of expanding this article. If we want an article on the whole of the network, it would be far better to expand the existing disambiguation page to be an overview article instead, and leave the details of the national channels, including the US channel, where they are. Andrewa (talk) 09:04, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Some numbers

I took a look at some numbers, and I think they support the proposed move.

Number of views (June 2010)
  • Cartoon Network (United States) had 63,917 views, which is a bit over 60% of all views of all the non-DAB pages. Put another way, this article had about 50% more view than all the other pages combined. The article ranked 6167 for the month.
  • No other page other than these two had a sufficient number of views to be tracked for page ranking. Their page rank is negligible.
  • The next-most popular pages are Australia (4962 views, 4.7%); India (4243 views, 4.0%); and UK/Ireland (4066 views, 3.95). It dwindles from there, down to France, which got only 389 views (0.4%).

Two things emerge for me from these numbers. First, overwhelmingly more readers are seeking out the US topic than any other; that is to say, the US page is the primary topic. Second, assuming that most of the 58,785 readers who arrived at the DAB page via the Cartoon Network redirect went on to one of the articles DABed from it, nearly all of those readers went to the US page. This suggests to me that the readers are not being well-served to have to go through the DAB page to get to the article they seek.

Incoming links

I checked to see how many incoming links each article had. I counted only links from the article space. A lot of links are generated by the {{Cartoon Network navbox}} template, which is transcluded into 87 pages. I accounted for that transclusion, which would otherwise skew the number of links (for example, Cartoon Network (France) has 94 links; but 87 of them are only present because the template is used in articles that have to do with Cartoon Network as a whole; only 7 links are deliberate links to the Cartoon Network (France) article).

  • The US article has 558 incoming links. This is 27.2% of the total number of links for all of the regional articles. The next highest ones are: Australia (225, 11.0%), Europe (221, 10.8%) and Philippines (145, 7.1%). Put another way, the US article has about as many incoming links as the next three highest combined. This too, suggest to me that the US article is the primary topic.
  • But here's the interesting thing: Cartoon Network, which redirects to the DAB page, has 1543 incoming links. There are 1543 articles that links to a DAB page rather than to a destination page. That's a disservice to our readers. Someone clicking on a highlighted term is supposed to go to the destination page, not a DAB page. But in this anomalous case, there are almost as many links to the DAB page (1543) as to all the regional articles combined (2052).
  • An observation: Something is a little strange when two different popularity measures, the proportion of views (60.7%) and the proportion of links (27.2%) are so different from one another. But note, if those 1543 links to the DAB page went to the US page, the US page would have 2101 links out of a total of 3595; or about 58.4%. Note that this very closely approximates the 60.7% page views number. This suggest to me that the high number of links to the dab page is indeed because of erroneous linking; i.e., an editor linking to "[[Cartoon Network]]" on the assumption that that's the desired page, rather than investigating the destination, seeing the DAB page and piping with "[[Cartoon Network (United States)|Cartoon Network]]".
My conclusion

My conclusion is that analysis of both of these metrics point out:

  1. Too many readers are driven to the DAB page when they want the US network page.
  2. This happens either by entering "Cartoon Network" or by clicking through an erroneous wikilink.
  3. By either measure, page views or internal links, the Cartoon Network (United States) article is the primary topic.

In sum, Cartoon Network (United States) should be moved to Cartoon Network, and point to Cartoon Network (disambiguation) via a hatnote such as {{about}}

Movie or Special?

I have a question. What makes a movie is a movie, and not a special episode? For example,The Powerpuff Girls: Twas the Fight Before Christmas is a movie, so why Billy and Mandy Save Christmas is a special? The Class of 3000: Home and The Secret Saturdays: The Kur Stone are the films, but The Class of 3000 Christmas Special and The Secret Saturdays: Kur aren't. How do I know that we are dealing with a film or a special episode? Dosblo (talk) 14:02, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

The Billy and Mandy Save Christmas and The Secret Saturdays: The Kur Stone are actually two part episodes and television special, not television movies. The Powerpuff Girls: Twas the Fight Before Christmas are direct to TV movie. There not listed at the Original made-for-TV movies section. JJ98 (Talk) 00:39, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Unknown Creators

Do you know who created The Moxy Show and Powerpuff Girls Z? 83.29.152.119 (talk) 13:53, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately, no, I can't find any mentioning creators the series. It is not even listed on IMDb and other sites. If the creator exists on each articles, its needs a reliable source per WP:RS and WP:V. JJ98 (Talk) 05:42, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Terra à vista

I found information about the show called Terra à vista. RocketWobbuffet wrote about this in talk: It aired in Brazil in 2000 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil. It was a crossover series, including characters from Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls. And here is part of the show on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0UT9NgIjfA. So is this a Cartoon Network original series or co-production? Egaruoc (talk) 19:14, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately no, that's not a co-production. Needs a source per WP:V and WP:N. YouTube is not a reliable source. JJ98 (Talk) 17:41, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Teen Titans

Cartoon Network took part in the production of Teen Titans. In the end credits of the show it says Executive Producer for Cartoon Network: Sam Register. So to be Teen Titans for the Cartoon Network original show / co-production? 83.29.132.25 (talk) 15:55, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Teen Titans is not a Cartoon Network original series. Cartoon Network does not own the show. Cartoon Network original series are series that are owned by Cartoon Network. Some are produced by Cartoon Network Studios, and some are not. Warner Brothers Entertainment owns Teen Titans, and Warner Brothers Animation is the producer, just like MAD, Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, Batman the Brave and the Bold, and any other Warner Brother's owned property that have aired on Cartoon Network originally.ETLamborghini (talk) 20:59, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

13 New Series

Cartoon Network has ordered 13 new series:

  • The Problem Solverz
  • Secret Mountain Fort Awesome
  • The Amazing World of Gumball
  • The Looney Tunes Show
  • Level Up
  • New Ben 10 Series
  • ThunderCats
  • Green Lantern: The Animated Series
  • DC Nation
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • Total Drama: Revenge of the Island
  • RedaKai: Conquer the Cairo
  • Lego Ninjago

The original series are definitely The Problem Solverz, Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, and probably a new Ben 10.

Original series aren't Warner Bros. Animation productions: The Looney Tunes Show, ThunderCats, DC Nation and Green Lantern: TAS, or a new Total Drama.

And what about the rest? The Amazing World of Gumball is the premiere on Cartoon Network UK and is produced in Europe, so is the original series or European co-production? Level Up, a new live-action series series is the CN original? How to Train Your Dragon is a DreamWorks production, but The Penguins of Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness are the Nickelodeon Originals, so maybe HtTYD will be a Cartoon Network original series? And what with RedaKai and Lego Ninjago?

Suggestions to impove the article

There suggestions to improve the article. This is the comments from H1nkles (talk · contribs):

Lead

  • Your writing has a lot of adverbs like "originally" "primarily" "mainly", these aren't necessary. Sometimes they have a place but they also clutter up the prose and many of them can be removed.
  • Third cable channel behind disney and nick. Third in what? Kids' programming? It's not clear.
  • Overall in the lead the writing is choppy and needs to be streamlined. Here's an example:
  • "Since 2009, it began airing a small amount of live-action programming, specifically movies from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, both of which are also owned by Time Warner." Rewrite like this, "In 2009 it started airing live-action programming, including movies from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema." No one cares that they're owned by Time Warner.
  • See WP:LEAD for instructions on what should be in a good lead. The lead should be a summary of the entire article and this lead should be enhanced to include every subject within the article (written in a summary style).

History

  • The clean up banner is legitimate and should be addressed. Usually clean up banners should be handled before the article is listed at WP:PR. I can see a number of [citation needed] templates in the following sections. These should be addressed and the sourcing improved.
  • As a general rule every paragraph should have at least one source, and more if there are multiple assertions.
  • See WP:INCITE for reference anchor placement. They don't go in the middle of the sentence but rather at the end unless the assertion is very controversial.
  • The parenthetical reference in the first sentence is too detailed. Give a few examples of what was acquired and leave it at that.
  • Watch out for one sentence paragraphs. These stubs are not acceptable at GAC. Consider combining or expanding.
  • Make sure titles are always italicized even when not linked.
  • What is meant by the "Powerhouse era"? What is powerhouse music?

Programming

  • This is a section with no prose. Not good. Sections with just a tophat are unnecessary. Either add some prose or remove the section. I think you fold in most of the programming info in the previous section.

Related projects

  • Here is a section "Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall" see above.

References

  • The key to references is consistency. Make sure every website ref has at least the title, url, publisher, and accessdate.
  • You probably want to use templates like {{cite web}} to help with consistency.
  • Deviantart appears to be a blog or discussion forum. This is not a credible reference. See WP:CITE and WP:VERIFY for instructions on credible references. Avoid blogs, forums, chat rooms, social networking sites etc.

Overall

  • As stated above the article needs a lot more referencing. This will be a major sticking point if you want it to pass GAC. * I would also seek out someone who can do a thorough copy edit.
  • There isn't much about the financing of the channel, advertising revenue, demographics that sort of thing. It would be nice to see some more information on these topics.
  • This concludes my review. Please contact me on my talk page if you have specific questions. Best of luck to you.

I've fix the issue. Some movies were carried from 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures which are not owned by Time Warner. I've improved some it a little bit, but the article needs to be rewrite and remove any blog, user and fan sites which are not reliable. Any reliable sources can be added per WP:V and WP:RS. Remember, {{Cite web}} is recommended. Good luck improving the article. JJ98 (Talk / Contributions) 01:35, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

There seems to be an over-reliance on online articles in this page. Where are the printed references on books? A small search through googlebooks points at least one book which does try to seriously analyze the network. Prime time animation: television animation and American culture" (2003) by Routledge publications devotes pages 97-105 to Cartoon Network and various aspects of it. In particular, its corporate ownership, its marketing strategies, its access to the "largest collection of animated programming" though ownership of Warner Brothers and MGM theatrical shorts, its merchandise campaigns, and its censorship practices. Why not summarize use citations from this and other available books to help this obviously underdeveloped article? I don't know if this is relevant to the Censorship section but, I found an interesting fact on this Adventure Time fan wiki article about an episode titled "Wizard" that says "The logs that cover Finn and the Old Wizards near the end of the episode were originally going to be beavers, but Cartoon Network edited it", although I have no idea where they have got that fact. Fancruft

This article has far too much information about little subjects (e.g. branding, previous programming). One excerpt in paticular:

"Beginning May 25, 2008, Cartoon Network has been airing animated shorts, called Wedgies, to fill in spots between two programs. On July 14, 2008, the network took on a newer look created by Tristan Eaton and was animated by Crew972. The bumpers of that era had white, faceless characters called Noods, based on the DIY toy, Munny. The standard network logo was then completely white, adopting different colors based on the occasion in the same style.[citation needed] On June 12, 2009, the screen bug then turned all black with white letters and starting March 2010, the words "CARTOON NETWORK" in Eagle (typeface) font is now white instead black and it starting to push down little further."

Ignoring the obvious grammar and fancruft speckled here and there, is it important to have these sections describing these 'eras'? I can understand branding elements can pertain an interest to a majority of people, but I'll eat a hat if this is considered encyclopedic. Whisternefet (talk) 20:11, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

International Cartoon Network pages are a mss, can't we have an agreed style for each. Also, they have been using these fan terms to refer to a certain "era" when the wikipedia manual of style states that wikipedia is not a guide. Kartoffel07 (talk) 09:51, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Logo galleries

Logo galleries for services like Cartoon Network HD and On Demand are extraneous, per MOS:LOGO. At the very least, keep the current variations of the logos, for those are the most relevant to the article at hand. Whisternefet©®℠℗™ 06:06, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Do we really even need the logo for the current CN HD? It's not that different than the regular CN one. Also, why is there no image of the classic CN logo? All the article has is the updated version. Paper Luigi TC 06:35, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
I uploaded the updated version of the logo from a PDF extraction, only because I suspect having two is kind of redundant, but then again I can add it back. As for the HD variant, probably not that necessary, but it's better than having two (former and new), which was the issue at hand here. Probably best to have less visual clutter, per MOS:LOGO. Whisternefet©®℠℗™ 08:07, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
The only logos I'm really for are whatever current logo is in the infobox and the original logo (the Boomerang one is fine too, I guess). Yeah, the gallery issue really does clutter things up. Let's hope no one tries to add it back lol. Paper Luigi TC 08:37, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
We show the old logos on plenty of other channels, it's the common practice and theree has to be a good reasoning for their removal. For that reason I have returned them and will continue to do so. Fry1989 eh? 17:43, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
The logos in question are non-vector/low-quality images that serve no other purpose besides highlighting an evolution in branding which can already be summed up by including the vector logos for the network proper (not HD/On Demand variants). Even if it is "common practice" for other articles like this one, it's redundant visual clutter. At the very least, include the most relevant ones. Demonstrating the progression from older logos to newer ones seem more relevant for wikis pertaining to logos in general. Whisternefet©®℠℗™ 22:25, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
That's your "opinion", not a policy. Fry1989 eh? 18:31, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

The 2010 variation of the 1992 Cartoon Network logo might be the new logo for Cartoon Network for life. It will actually be used June 1, 2013, the same date they spun [adult swim] off into its own uncensored channel running 24/7/365, and the same release date for Cartoon Network's new replacement late night channel, CN @ Night. CN @ Night might launch June 1, 2013 @ 9pm/8pm central at night. CN @ Night signs off every morning @ 6am/5am central.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.11.226.201 (talk) 12:40 pm, 1 April 2013, Monday (7 months, 21 days ago) (UTC−6)

Proposed merge with Cartoon Cartoons

Hi, there are a few reasons why I think the article should be merged with this one. For starters, there's no clear definition of what a "Cartoon Cartoon" actually is, other than a label used by the network for "original series" for some years. Some controversy exists over the term, too. For example, although it has been "confirmed" that Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Camp Lazlo are Cartoon Cartoons (according to the talk page and hidden comments in the article's body), they aren't listed as such in the main text. Next, the bulk of the article is a list of programs made up of info taken from the lead of the individual cartoon articles. Take away this section, and we're left with 7 short paragraphs and only 1 reference. Most, if not all of this remaining info could be incorporated into this one on Cartoon Network. Paper Luigi TC 23:26, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Anyone object to this? Agree, disagree, comment, etc.? Paper Luigi TC 00:28, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

First cartoon aired

This article currently states that the first program broadcast by CN was Rhapsody Rabbit. That bit of info was added here, on July 4, 2012, but no source was actually cited for it. The cartoon isn't mentioned in the Oct. 1, 1992, newspaper article, and I even have a problem with Van Partible's blog post, as he could've obtained his info from Wikipedia (where else would he get his info about events from October 1?). Now, what makes me bring this up is part of an article on Variety's website about CN's 20th birthday. It includes key dates in CN history, one being the network's premiere date and first program shown, which Variety Staff believe is The Great Piggy Bank Robbery, not Rhapsody Rabbit. Should we go with the blog post, the Variety article, or something different? Paper Luigi TC 00:41, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

I googled this, right. I was lead to this forum post [1] here. Had some interesting information, which wasn't too verifiable; until he posted an article a few posts down, here. So, it was an hour-long special called "Droopy's Guide to the Cartoon Network" which apparently showed Rhapsody Rabbit first, but the cartoon part isn't mentioned anywhere in the article. The forum post definitely isn't a RS, but, I'll try to look for more info. || Tako (talk) 01:00, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
While I'm not able to access the entire newspaper (and have no idea how to gain access to their archives right now), I did find this snippet by doing a search (third result) in Google Books:

"When the network launches, the character known as Droopy will introduce the service to viewers and then present the Cartoon Network's first animated cartoon, "Rhapsody Rabbit," starring Bugs Bunny."

— The Hollywood Reporter
page 81 of this Newspaper, apparently. I'll look for access to the archives. || Tako (talk) 01:25, 1 June 2013 (UTC)
Nice detective work. I've added some of that info to the launch section, including the Hollywood Reporter source. Paper Luigi TC 01:49, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Serious question, Who is Kevin Sandler?=

Throughout this article there are several instances where this person is referenced. He is never explained who he is or what value of authority, if any he is. The citations at the bottom don't link to his own work and it appears it's quoting something that someone quoted him.

There seems to be no proper citation on what he has information or studies upon and in truth many of his assertions seem kind of bias and contrary to what the "general public" would believe today. For example his assertion it was SGC2C that won over adult viewers seems to not flow with the idea that the main audiences viewable in any modern social media search would show is is college age and younger viewers who find it "cool" to watch things the tv says they shouldn't. I feel using "cool" is a fair term use given that Mr Sandler seems to find some people appreciated a show being "hip" is an appropriate coinage in a study.

Now if he wrote this article? book? editorial? based on a survey of some kind he might very well have had evidence to go on, but survery bias isn't exactly not expected, but still given the article offers no incite into who he is/was and what he did to be able to back any of it up, we are left wondering who is this person who seems to be presenting his own whimsical theories that do defy the current beliefs.

Now if we could add a sentence detailing who this man is and why his opinion is of relevance than so be it, but without any validation i don't see what this man's opinions are doing in this article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.171.176.63 (talk) 02:53, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

My Gym Partner's a Monkey DID premiere in 2005

I'm not kidding. I'm sorry, but My Gym Partner's a Monkey premiered on the same year as Camp Lazlo, the Life and times of Juniper Lee, Sunday Pants, and Ben 10. So, technically, 2005 was when Cartoon Network premiered about 5 new shows in one year. Yes, 2004 was when Cartoon Network premiered three new shows, but 2006 was when Cartoon Network premiered just two shows: Squirrel Boy and Class of 3000. • Oppose. Readable prose is 41K per WP:RPS. This is close to the WP:SIZERULE 40k so need for split based on size if very low at this point. Turner is STILL the owner of CN.

Yes, it is true that CN will be transferred to Warner Bros. But stuff like this takes time and Cartoon Network's website still lists the network as being owned by Turner Broadcasting System. The change hasn't happened yet. Turner still exists for now and unless there is a source that says the change has occurred, please do NOT change Cartoon Network's owner to Warner Bros.. HurricaneGeek2002 (talk) 17:14, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Owner parameter

Look, I don't particularly care about who is listed in the owner parameter of the infobox. My issue is that whoever is listed needs to consistent with what is in the text of the article. If the text of the article says it's owned by one company (WarnerMedia), the infobox shouldn't say something else (WarnerMedia Ent.). In addition, the edit warring is getting disruptive. Please discuss it here. Aoi (青い) (talk) 02:44, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Jeez Louise, Everybody is fighting over the owner parameter, Otherwise than Turner and Warner Bros., I would make no sense to have “just WarnerMedia”. It makes no sense at all, mentioning about Trivialist who changed Warner Bros AND Turner to WarnerMedia, rather be, if the spilt isn’t happening at all, (i doubt) Turner could’ve stayed on there if this edit war didn’t start in the first. Not to mention the spilt away from Turner to Warner Bros’ Warner Bros. Global Kids & Young Adults for Cartoon Network and Boomerang to go into, Again, if the spilt is not happening, then why does WB.GK&YA even exist? Of course, none of you even know that Turner defuncted. As of it’s website redirecting to WarnerMedia’s, Would that mean shit? So everyone, Leave the owner parameter alone until the spilt happens. (if so) HappyINC (talk) 03:42, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

Ergo, there is a lot confusion if Turner split into WB. Even though in my opinion, I would be cool if CN switches into WB. After days, [edit here] by User SLBBenfis23 sourced this edit, but user VictorTorres2002 [it.] [I put it back] saying that "The edit is reliably sourced, And the website, They will change the ownership, but they need time, y’know? Just like BabyTV, owned by Disney, it’s website says that it’s still owned by Fox. So we should be good to go now." But none of you listened to me. Now with that out of the way, can you all at least, just stay away from the parameter and stick to CN's recent significant news? cus this is beginning to be too much. Also, Aoi, You should have said this issue in this talk page section 'Turner is STILL the owner of CN." Thanks, HappyINC (talk) 15:00, 21 May 2019 (UTC)

Part of the problem is that WarnerMedia did not state that the Turner Broadcasting split was going to happen effective immediately despite mentions of that company being removed from their channels' press releases. In the case of Warner Bros. gaining Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, that process may have been affected or delayed due to their CEO being ousted just days later due to a scandal. I'd say to just leave Turner as the owners of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim per WP:CRYSTAL until we get an official announcement. IceWalrus236 (talk) 18:38, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
I'm fine with IceWalrus236's reasoning for leaving the field as "Turner" for now. Aoi (青い) (talk) 22:00, 21 May 2019 (UTC)
