1981-1983

[edit]

In 1982 (maybe it was December 1981) CVW3 on the JFK (CV-67) joined up with two other carriers, the Ike (CVN-69) and the Nimitz (CVN-68) to challenge Quadafi's 'Line-of-death' north of Lybia. I heard a rumor that every military aircraft that launched in Lybia at that time went south. We got there after the Nimitz F-14s shot down those first two Lybian SU-22s.

That was before going through the Suez Canal (just the second Carrier to do so) to the north Arabian Sea to watch Iran, and then to Australia for a port visit. We then transited back through the Suez Canal just in time for the 1982 Israeli attack on southern Lebanon. 'After' we established 'Gonzo Station' off the coast of Lebanon, The Indy (CV-62) came out to join us, and got an Expeditionary Medal Citation for 'establishing Gonzo Station', we didn't, not that I'm bitter or anything...

The strikes against 'Syrian positions' in Lebanon were made in 1983, on a different cruise (South Atlantic/Med). That was the time the A-6E was shot down with the pilot Lt. Mark "Doppler" Lange, killed and the bomber/navigator Lt. Bobby Goodman captured, subsequently released to Jesse Jackson. That was around a week after I left CVW3 by way of Rota Spain to return to the US.

I have no documentation for this, I was just there for the first part. I read about the strikes much later in a book about that cruise on the JFK. here is an article I found on the web --Colputt 05:47, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Marine Unit

[edit]

Is the Marine squadron actually part of this air-wing? The website for that unit appears to make no mention of the fact. Sabre ball (talk) 17:55, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
